Over charging question
I am running a 1982 GS1000sz with the charging system intact. This a race bike, so no lights, blinkers, etc. The output is hovering around 16v at the battery. I pulled 1 of the 3 legs and am getting around 15.7v I pulled 2 and the system doesn't charge. Replaced the rectifier with same results. What is a quick fix my situation? Thanks for any input. Have a read through here. It may help.

If the replacement R/R was good, I think I would look at the grounds first. Using a stainless steel star washer on both sides of the ground terminal helps insure a good connection. I replaced the motor to the battery ground with heavier wire, and have the ground from my compufire unit directly to the battery in addition to the case of the unit being grounded directly to the frame and the stock ground points. You are in battery frying territory with those voltages.Last edited by OldVet66; 06-14-2011, 07:48 AM.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

I forgot to say that the stock system was designed assuming a load for the headlamp and tail light. Two stator leads should charge it properly. Three will overcharge it. Before the Headlight always on laws Suzuki switched off one stator leg with the headlight.Last edited by OldVet66; 06-14-2011, 05:46 PM.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

Get a later model R/R that has SCR's on all three stator legs and see if it can regulate down. The 83 ED's have 3 SCR's, the 81 GS750 was a single as I recall.
