Dyna S Install Question
Hello again, Well my Dyna S system arrived and looks similar to the Martek that was on the bike, 1977 GS750. The magnetic cam slips right into the advance but after the hex nut and bolt are replaced there is a space between the cam and the hex nut. The space is just enough for the cam to side out of the advance unit. I don't see any spacers in the kit to fill that gap on the shaft. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.Tags: None

I have the Kokusan setup on my bike if you want me to take any measurements.

I know the DS3-2 comes with a spacer for use with the EI systems only (it seems that they pack too large a spacer in fact, and almost everyone has to grind the spacer or rotor down so they can advance when installed) - that's not supposed to be needed for points but I've never done that so I have no first hand experience. Since the DS3-1 is only for early 550/750 KD points systems, that one likely doesn't come with a spacer: don't see one in the bag on Z1's product picture. Which did you buy? Since you had an aftermarket ignition already were there any signs of whether the old ignition was ND or KD? Usually owners tell by the condensers or the stamp on the ignition plate, but yours would have been gone I suppose?

Thanks Don. I knew that, dunno if it was brain fart or typo. Sorry, will edit original post. DS3-1 is for 550/750 KD points systems only. DS3-2 for ND points and all 8V mechanical advance EI.

Today I contacted Dynatek and they are sending me the spacers. They said I could washer it and it would also be fine as long as the rotor would be free to advance. I put some 14mm washers in and it works. The rotor is not in a bind and now I have cylinders 2 and 3 firing. The sensor on one side was dead on the old unit. I tired to time the new unit for 1 and 4 and I have run out of slot space on the backing plate and its a little to advanced. The sensors can be move a little so I'll try that tomorrow. I have the points setup but I don't see any thing about the brand. I wonder if the rotor is slightly different on the DS3-2 compared to the 1. Thanks for everyones input. Hey at least its firing on all four.

HI ,not that this is your prob but I recieved a new unit last year that was dead on one side. are you sure your turning the plate correct, im sure you are. rotate clockwise to retard. counter to advance.

I contacted Dyna today and they said to set the plate with the screws in the middle of the slot and only to time it in the full advance position above 2500 rpm's. The marks are way to the left when the light flashes. When rotating the plate I still don't have enough slot left to line up the marks for full advance. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks again.

I installed my ds3-2 yesterday you dont rotate the plate to full advance you turn the motor until the advance mark lines up with the mark on the backing plate then rotate the rotor by hand to full advance then the test light should come on cheers.

I am using a timing light and shouldn't the light fire on full advance when the engine is above 2500?

I havent got a timing light as yet just did mine statically but seems to run ok will have to get a timing light later. If it lines up a idle with the first mark shouldnt that be okay.

Yes it should. Still wondering if you bought the wrong model and that's why you can't get it to line up?
When mine was timed it was at the very end of its slots. Seen lots of people say that.

Today I received the spacers for the rotor from Dyna. When I talked with them he said the spacer was in a package with a few other parts and he said he would just send the whole bag and I'm glad he did. A rotor was also in the package and I could tell that the magnet was in a different position then the rotor I had. The position looked like the difference I was talking about in timing. I installed it with the screw in the center of the slot and fired it up and it was right on the money with all cylinders in time with the strobe. Thanks for everyones input.
