Sorry for the confusion... I guess my '80 GS750L has a different sending unit location you can see here.

Interesting... sorry I should have realized we were talking about the larger motors - OP has a 1000 - at the risk of hijacking further... just out of curiosity would the 750 plop into the 550 frame?

That is a nice motor you got there.

I've got to make a slight update to my post, since it turns out that my memory, not the wiring diagram, was correct this time around. While reattaching the wires from the left/right switches to the main harness, I realized that I had two extra wires at the connector for the right hand switch. The starter wire from the solenoid had no mate in the harness, and where there should have been a blank space, a yellow wire long enough to reach the battery was attached. A quick test with the multimeter showed no continuity on the original starter wire - it must have had a break somewhere along the way and been replaced with the longer yellow wire by a previous owner.

While I did take the harness off the bike completely and clean all connections, I never went as far as cutting away the tape/rubber and re-wrapping the whole harness. Now I wish I would have. This time I'm going to be guilty of a shortcut and leave things the way they are. As long as it starts, I'll be happy, and the extra wire will only bother me when the tank is off!
