    Hey guess what? An R/R thread!

    100% certain I have a bad r/r after reading the Stator Papers and going through the entire test phase. By the way, that is the single most useful and straight forward testing protocol I have ever had the good fortune to use, many thanks to whomever put that all together.

    So I need to buy an r/r. Ok, fine. I've seen the list of compatible ones, but I want to know if there's any particular one that stands out heads and tails above the rest. If I'm going to drop $100+, I'd like to buy the best one I can.

    So what are people's thoughts? As of right now, I'm leaning towards the 07 CBR1000RR one; I may be a little CBR biased.

    Or is it simply a crapshoot and most new ones are pretty much the same?

    Any of the newer compatible Shindengen r/r units will be fine. They are much more robust than the stock Suzuki units. They are not nearly as stressed and run a little cooler.

    Be sure to check out the updates/addendum to the Stator Papers written by Mr. posplayr. They are in the Electrical section on my little website.

      Also do a search for threads on Comufire brand.
      Jim (posplayr) has made a strong argument for the series type r/r in that they will in theory allow the stator to run cooler.

      Instead of shunting the excess voltage to ground they basically 'turn off' the voltage during the period where the battery is full.

      The newer FET type r/r's are basically the same as the older type r/r, ala the shindengen sh232-12, but use a FET to control the flow of voltage as opposed to an SCR. They run cooler due to the FET being an efficient manager of the voltage 'switch' and they are capable of handling a much higher amperage as well.

      Many on this site have installed an older shindengen 232/532 etc and run many happy years without a failure.

      I currently have a shindengen sh532-12 installed on my 79 850 with another spare sh532-12 in the wings and an FH010 as a backup backup

      If I remember correctly the Compufire can be bought for around $110, the FH models on fleabay for around $65 and the honda r/r for $40 and up.

      As posplayr will tell you, an ounce of prevention, that means clean all contacts, take the fusebox out of the charge loop and install single point grounding.

            Would a SH 232 12 7.5 work? Or does that imply that it's a 7.5a unit? I don't understand how the model numbers work.

            Edit: or a SH532-12 1.0,

                Yes, as long as the R/R is of the sh232-12 or sh532-12 they tend to be a stable platform.

                As Ed said, the FET models are at the top of the shunt type R/R's due to the reduced heat from the R/R and their efficiency.

                The one he linked to is at a competitive price as well!
