    Teach me Starter Motor

I opened the starter motor to replace the brushes.
    1. I found one loose wire and soldered it back (pic 1).
    2. Cleaned (sanded) the commutator and armature (pic 2), and
    3. Replaced the brushes (pic 3).
Now the starter motor doesn't work - it shorts (i tested it through a fused jumper cables).

    Have I done something wrong??

Can you teach me how to use the voltmeter to test what's wrong with the starter motor?

    TIA

I haven't openned one of these up yet, but many others have, so someone should show up. You have to make sure positive feed to brush isn't grounding out. They make fused jumper cables? I could get into lots of trouble with them!
