Has anyone installed one of these yet?

I have a gs550l that acts like it has a rev limiter on it when I hit 4000 rpms. At first I was considering replacing just coils wires and plugs (all plugs are black cyls 3 and 4 are blowing fuel straight out and are wet when I stop running and step over the puddle of fuel now in my driveway)...

carbs were completely rebuilt, so I'm ruling them out, as the 4000rpm issue was the reason I sent them out for rebuild, although they look and work great now, the bike is still struggling. Even tried the choke trick to see if the issue was in the carbs running rich, but no difference still runs like its flooding out.

When I saw I could replace the entire ignition for a few bucks more I was intrigued, since I read the signal generator could be part of the problem...

    Anyway, two questions;

    1. how do I tell how many ohms my stock coils are? I puled one off Yesterday and all I see stamped on it is 33312v so am i to assume they are 3 ohm coils?

    2. The above mentioned kit, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about them? Can they be bolted on with no additional configuration, or is there timing and settings needed to get this running.... my experience is limited when it comes to timing and fine tuning...

    Thanks in advance

Sending your carbs out to be rebuilt was probably not a very good move. Unless you have implicit trust in whoever did them, they might still not be set up correctly.

It sounds like the float levels are incorrect (high), which will affect jetting and how well it runs at high RPM.

    But, to answer your questions:
    1. You need to measure your coils or tell us what year your 550 is. Before 1980, they were nominal 5 ohm coils. Starting in 1980, they were a nominal 3 ohms.

    2. Not sure if you need the Dyna 2000 or the Dyna S, but many members here have installed both of them, so they will have to give you details.

      Is the airbox installed?

That Dyna 2000 is expensive. You can use the Dyna S w/green coils. Much cheap, yet good quality.

My guess is you need neither of the ignition parts. It's most likely a carb issue (it always is).

        Sorry,

        1980 GS550L completely stock.

I wanted to have my local dealer rebuild my carbs, I couldn't believe my ears when they told me they wont work on anything older than 15 years.

I'm tempted to tear into them myself, just a bit intimidating for a computer guy to be tinkering in carbs

Where can I find the correct float height for the stock carbs? My brother put them on for me when they came back from rebuild and I do remember him having a fit as they poured gas straight out the vent tubes, he took off the bowls and was complaining the guy did not set the correct float height and adjusted them... he put it back together and they did the same thing... Till I saw the bike and realized he had the vent tubes pointing straight down instead of routing them over the air box under the seat.. I fixed this, as well as the bad vacum petcock and put about 60 miles under me as long as i stayed under 4000rpms it was good (again, this was what the bike did before rebuilding the carbs as well.) its gotten bad the last time I tried to start it however and you could really smell the raw gas blowing by as it drained out the airbox in my driveway, i shut it down (it was missing pretty good) and pulled the plugs, all showed a rich mix but 3 and 4 were soaked... the plugs fire when pulled from the head they all have a white spark.

thanks again for the help, getting this bike going again means a lot to me and my wife as it was her father's who recently passed away.

Someone helped me earlier with a diagram that helped me fix my front master cylinder as well, this is a great place for owners of these bikes! us weekend warriors appreciate it!

        thanks again

My signature has a link to the carb rebuild tutorial.

So the airbox is installed, air cleaner installed, and the bike is stock otherwise right?

Yep, Filter in place, air box sealed. Although that does seem to be where the fuel is blowing back through.

I just read your tutorial, great work! I'm almost convinced i could do that following your instructions...

i do remember my brother saying he set the floats to .88 that the guy that rebuilt them left them set flat with no adjustment on the tang at all.

like I said, after i fixed the vent tubes by getting them over the carbs, it ran great under 4000 rpm, started great, idled nice and smooth too, just went all to hell in the last week. starting rough, with a miss, revving through it the gas starts to blowby and will not idle without holding on a little throttle now.

You guys know more than i do, If you think i should still look at the carbs I'll believe you.

I was just thinking of the next possibility, as the carbs seemed to be ok otherwise. and leaning out the mix with the choke trick did not seem to show anything related to the fuel / air system causing the bogging.
