Aaaah I see! I always wanted one of those when I was doing a lot of electronics fiddling... I noticed they come in very handy!

Kokar, just ran in to this, Amazing work mate!!!
i was wondering about the R/R? any luck with that? my is on its way out and i dont want to spend $100 for something that i could possibly do myself for $20, Thank You

        Kokar,
I hope you are still watching this thread. I have not tested my ignitor, but sat down with a multimeter to do some bench tests on it just to make sure I did not mess anything up. I could not measure any voltage on the 2SK163 (I used a BS170) except the +12V rail on the Drain pin. Can you recall if you did any voltage readings on it and what they were?
I am not so familiar with using a FET in that sort of configuration.
        Thanks.

the price for the FET 2SK163 is too small, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2SK163-Tra...ht_4679wt_1202

          i don't know if the BS170 is 100% compatible

              Kokar,
The problem was that I could not find a supplier for the 2SK163 so tried the BS170 and now have no voltage at the FET output.

Do you know if the out put voltage on your FET was 4V7 as per the zener voltage?

If so I can try using the LM2931 which is a 5 Volt regulator for automotive use. It is also a TO92 type. I just need to be sure on the exact purpose of the 2SK163.

              Thanks for coming back.

                look the image

i think that the BS170 is ok for the job

Thanks, I have ordered some 2SK163 Fets just in case. Will do some more testing in the mean time.

                    Kokar,
I have received the 2SK163 Nfets and they work.

I measured 3.7V there, the BS170 does not seem to work, but I will play with them a bit when I have some time.

I did briefly try the LM2931 which gave me a perfect 5V on that rail, but that was just to satisfy myself

Just thought I should post this in case someone else needs this info.

Someone here selling working igniters for an 81 GS550TX? I can't tell with all the tech talk :P

I think this was only a DIY thread on how to build your own.

these days I make a modification to the original schematic of igniter and i used FET instead ntarligiton transistors.
the FET have very low resistance when is ON so that we have better SPARK

                              So, are these n-channel (mos)fet's ?

Very interesting! Have you got it running with the FETs? Tell us more!
