Difference in AGM and Gel Battery

What's the difference in the AGM and Gel type batteries? Are they the same thing? If different, what are the differences and which is the best one for motor cycle use?

AGM batteries are also known as "Sealed Lead Acid" (SLA) and uses the same method of "gas recombination" as the "Gel" battery so these two are often confused.

The AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery uses a very absorbent micro fiberglass material to trap the gas generated during discharge and recharge. The Gel battery uses a gelatin technology to similarly trap and recycle this gas internally thus both types are "sealed", "maintenance free" and "Non-Spillable". The AGM is the most common because of lower manufacturing costs and Gel batteries have an inherent disadvantage of requiring a very precise recharge voltage or it will be overcharged and ruined.

      AGM Battery Advantages:
Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries or AGM Batteries
do not leak, freeze and do not require any maintenance.
An AGM Battery can be stored for a long period of time without charging.

AGM Battery Choose from our great selection of absorbed glass matt (AGM) batteries. AGM batteries are lighter and smaller product yet still capable of performing up to the same standards as flooded lead acid batteries. AGM Batteries are a very popular choice for motorcycles and performance automobiles.

Choose from our selection of 4-, 6- and 12-volt deep cycle AGM batteries to provide excellent battery power for your motorcycle or high performance vehicle. AGM batteries have high power density, are vibration resistant and can be charged and discharged rapidly.

We offer a tremendous selection of sealed lead acid, absorbent glass mat batteries or AGM deep cycle batteries from top brand name manufacturers, such as Toyo, Panasonic, Power-Sonic, Universal and Eagle-Picher for superior battery power. Choose from 2-, 4-, 6- and 12-volt SLA batteries to power everything from portable electronic devices to car batteries.

AGM Battery Eagle-Picher, a trusted name in the AGM battery industry, features a fantastic selection of sealed lead acid batteries in CF, CFR and HE series to provide premium AGM battery power. The Eagle-Picher Carefree (CF) series features 2-, 4-, 6- and 12-volt sealed lead acid batteries for use in telecommunications, security, portable medical and UPS battery back ups.

Panasonic has a terrific reputation in the battery business, and they offer a wide selection of sealed lead acid AGM deep cycle batteries in 6- and 12-volt capacities. Panasonic SLA batteries require no water and feature a lead-tin calcium alloy as the grid. Panasonic SLA AGM deep cycle batteries have terrific construction to protect against severe use conditions including overcharge, over discharge, shock and vibration. Panasonic sealed lead acid batteries can be used for a variety of applications including VTRs, electric power tools, engine starter and UPS battery back ups.

AGM = very good battery for a decent price.
Gel = very good battery for a ludicrous price.

            The difference?

            Well, functionally?

            None at all.

On eBay Don? Delkevic brand? I ask because that's the price I saw them for for my 450 and was thinking I'd go that way when I'm ready for it... free postage is good too of course
