    Advance governor springs

Bike wouldnt idle then died on the off ramp after a 20 minute xway ride. Got it home with a push start and careful clutch and throttle balancing to keep the rpms up. She ran fine with 3k and up rpms. Started at the battery, checked all connections. worked my way through. The last thing i checked was the signal generator and governor. When i took the cover off, bam, the problem smacked me in the face. The two springs on the advance governor assembly broke right off at the same spot on one end of each. Looks as if both were from the 80's. Im suprised they didnt break sooner. they were just laying there in the bottom of the case mocking me and laughing at me.
    Now what?
I cant find matching springs locally. (doesnt mean they dont exist) So far, they have all been completely the wrong size in every way. Does anyone know of a place to buy the springs? or something they know to work in place of those springs?

Try and get a used advance mechanism. Try ebay or the parts section of the forum.
Maybe someone will chime in that has some spares.

Well, yeah , they were from the 80's, like the rest of the bike-so be afraid! Anyways, it's nice to know the bike can carry on despite this. If you don't find any replacements, let me know, as I have spares which are also 30 + years old and rusty.

Lol! yeah.......rusty bits that have constant load on them are kinda scary. Luckily most of my bike isnt in such poor shape as these decrepit springs were. Its always the littlest of things huh.

Im going to try a local, and not so local salvage yard a co worker recommended. i pray they have what i need. Ill be in touch if all else fails.
Like you, it never ceases to amaze me how reliable these bikes are. i guess this experience shall go into the mental toolbox for later use in case such a problem occurs again. Woot mutha fuggin woot

one more thing, how stiff should the springs be on one of these assemblies? the ones that broke off mine have a strong resistance to being flexed and pulled apart for such little springs. (maybe thats what caused the ends to break off? eh)

In theory, they are stiff enough to hold timing advance to 10 degrees BTDC at idle, and then gradually stretch to allow for maybe 35 degrees advance at 4k rpm. If you find some springs, get operation with timing light.
