        I have an '80 "L" model. I am afraid to chime in as I feel your bike is not an '80. If you look at the exploded diagram (microfische) already posted you can see how the sender "should" be inside the tank. Not all motorcycles have a gauge, some you actually take off the cap and LOOK inside to see the fuel level. But a key link in that type of system is a petcock that has a Reserve setting. There is a second pick-up tube to reach deeper into the tank and if you run out of fuel with the petcock in "run" or "on" you simpley switch it to "reserve" and hit the next petrol station...
        Our '80 "L" doesn't have that style of a petcock, when you run out you are done, time to push. I think that was the influence of adding a gauge.

          If you go to basscliffs site the is a few pictures of the sender mounted in tank under "fuel sender overhaul".It looks like early gs750's had no fuel or gear position indicators, but i may be wrong,and that is what model your tank was off.Just got my camera back and the batteries are charging if you still need an image of tank let me know

            Well if anyone sees a GS tank with the fuel gauge sender attached try and get in touch with me as Im desperate to get this sorted. My 'Baby Bike' Honda Shadow died yesterday so Im bikeless at the moment

              I'm also interested in this because I'm using a tank that has no fuel sensor but have a harness and set of gauges that have the fuel guage. I'd love to be able to make it work... What would it take to add a sensor to a tank that doesn't have one?

              or is there an aftermarket alternative - like those used for marine applications that could be fitted?

                Apparetly it s a pain in the arse to add a fuel float/sensor to an older tank. Hard not to get leaks. Ive finally decided on a fuel cap with fuel float on that. Just got to get the measurements for the fuel filler hole...



                If you have got all the bits and just need a tank Id suggest just replace your tank for a more modern one. Its seems (Not 100% sure, so check) that anything after 1980 that was an L model (GS750L etc) had the fluel float/sensor on. Just look underneath the tank for a circular sensor... also check the mounting bolts as some had just the 1 and some had 2.

                  Heh that just goes to show there is more than one way to skin a cat. Pretty cool

                  I did consider that but I've already put some time in to shaping this one and like how it came out / really want to use it. Surprised no one has done this already. Would it not be as simple as drilling holes in the tank and using the same parts off a tank that has it?

                    Well thats what I thought but everyone has said its difficult to do... maybe you could buy an old tank and try it. If it does work you might have a customer here with a tank that needs a float/sensor lol
