The bike i inherited has never started with the ignition button always kick start it has a Newtronic Electronic Ignition fitted, i assumed its just a dead start switch but with my general ignorance of electronic ignitions presumably the bike would not not run at all if the whole electronic ignition was dead or would the job it does in place of points still work if its just the start switch which has died

Your EI is a different circuit to your electric starter. Usually the first thing that goes on the starter circuit is the solenoid - try flashing a spanner across the terminals and see if she spins. After that it's a look at your push button / wiring connections / starter motor armature and brushes.79 GS1000S
