    Dyna 2000 coils - clearance??

    Hi gurus!

    I just received my Dyna 2000 system for my '82 GS1100G complete with spark plug cables and colis. But the 2.2ohm coils don't fit onto the existing coil mounts. They are a lot bigger than the original coils. I have no problems with grinding some of the frame away to allow them to fit but they are even too wide to fit in the frame where the old ones did. I can make some spacers to bolt them to the existing mounts but then I can't screw the connecting wires in.

    Has anyone encountered these issues before? Anyone found a handy dandy solution?

    My other issue is that I can't loosen the allen-key bolt at the end of the crankshaft to attach the black timing shaft thing - but one thing at a a time!

    I've seen coils mounted with zip ties, with one mount and somewhere else. Try zip tying it with the outputs sideways facing out or anyway they will fit.
    On the crank trigger put it in gear with the rear brake on and try it then.

    1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

      Thanks - I'll try. Man that thing seems really stuck though. I have applied some WD40 to try and loosen it but can't budge it.

      As for the coils, I think I'll aim for something a little sturdier than zip-ties!

        Just curious why you went with 2.2 ohm coils. I thought that 3 ohms was the usual choice.

        Don't use WD40, it's NOT a penetrating oil.

        Try using PB Blaster, Kroil or any number of PENETRATING oils, they will work a whole lot better.

        WD40 has some MILD lubricating qualities, but was designed as a WATER DISPLACEMENT agent.
        The inventor was not satisfied with his first 39 attempts, therefore we ended up with WD-40. (<-- click link)

          I went with 2.2 coils because that was what Dynatek recommends apparently. It came as a kit from Dynoman.com.

          I will try something else to try loosen the bolt. I will also apply whatever that will be to the screws that hold the plate there as well. This ignition really doesn't want to come out!

            Yes Steves right use penetrating oil.
            Use a impact driver on the screws on the ignition plate so you don't strip the heads.
            I use blue loctite on the crank trigger rotor but sounds like maybe someone used red. If you don't have luck with the penetrating oil and a breaker bar try applying a small amount of heat but be careful not to get the crank seal too hot.

              D'oh! It wasn't WD40 I used, it's CRC 5.56. Says on the can it's a "penetrant and lubricant..." well it doesn't seem to be penetrating very much! I always get those cans mixed up - not when I use them, but when I try to remember what they are. I don't actually own any WD40!

              I'll try spraying some more on. Man is it stuck.

                Not that long ago I saw someone on this board who was advertising a machined aluminum offset coil mount for bolting up oversize coils to the stock mounts. The big Dyna coils on my blue bike are kind of jury-rigged mounted so this slick aluminum offset mount caught my eye. Now I just can't remember who it was that had 'em. Had to be one of the machinist on here....Greg B maybe?

                    I found the solution to my clearance issue! I emailed Dynoman who I had bought the parts from and he said the coils will fit if I use the stock spacers. So that's a bit embarrassing... I hadn't noticed any spacers on the stock coils because they were covered in black crud. Once I scraped all the crap off, sure enough there were aluminium spacers there and now my new coils fit just fine.

                    This is a very cheap solution. :-)
