Suzuki newbie

Needing some help here...I just bought a suzuki gs850 L. The previous owner replaced the stock ignition with an aftermarket part. Now the wires of course dont match with the color coded schematic. I traced the wires and understand what goes where but where does this belong? I cant find a mount anywhere and im trying to put everything back to original to diagnose a possible electrical issue.



Forgive me for being a little uneducated with this..im in a learning phase.

That will be your ignitor (also incorrectly referred to by some as the CDI). Its usually mounted under the left sidecover on a plate bolted to the battery box.

Are you certain? My igniter is totally different than that one (of course, so is the bike) but that looks like the turn signal auto-cancel relay to me. We need to see the connector, avbove38.
A non-fuzzy picture would also be a boon.
If I am incorrect, of course, it would not be the first time, nor the last.

AFAIK the 80 and up turn canceller had a plastic resin filled box that does not have mounting ears for screws, but mounts like the flasher relay.

Unless that ignitor is spare as he has a Dyna fitted?

Yes, that is what my igniter looks like and I am pretty sure the 850 is similar, but IDK what year they started using that design. The number would be awesome if it has not washed out by now.

That looks like a early gsxr or katana ignitor from like 86 to 88

Hi Mr. avbove38,

This is not a great picture here, but on my GS850GT the igniter (that's what I think it is too) is under the left (as you sit on the bike) side cover. It's there to the left of the fuse box and beneath the starter solenoid.



My thumb is basically pointing at it. You might find some better pictures in either the stator or r/r replacement guides on my little website. If you look at the turn signal relay replacement guide you'll see that the turn signal control unit and stock turn signal relay look very different from the igniter, at least on my GS850. If you download a manual you find guides for component and cable placement.

Now let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'.

I believe that style of ignitor (32900-xxxxx) first showed up on 650 shafties in 81. On a 650, it's mounted on plate under the airfilter box. As I recall, blowerbike called it the "module" style.

The type of ignitor the OP has is quite common. It believe it's the type with the ignition curve built into the box - for the later 850/1100G shaft drive bikes.

oh and sorry but its a 82 gs850 L. I see the previous owner replaced the ignition and put an aftermarket one in its place. Im in a troubleshooting phase right now. short on funds so have to wait to get a battery before I can try to see if i have power and/or if she fires up.

and im also posting this in parts but i am looking to get rid of the stock sissy bar for this bike if anyone is interested.

So this is the new project. Havent started anything on it yet except removing the sissy bar, not my style. Time is tight and money is too but looking to do work on it in the next few weeks.

Looks like a nice starting point. With some tank badges, a seat modification and deleting that sissy bar, it should be a sweet bike!



Is the camera lens filthy or got some vasoline on it?
It doesn't appear to be raining in that picture.

Sissy bar is already gone, took it off the second I had it in the driveway. The lens on my iphone is scratched hence the blurry pic.
