    83 GS1100G ignition

Hello Guys, I have a question for the knowledgeable Zuk guru's here at GS Resources.

I have a 1983 GS1100G and have lost one side of the ignition, 1 and 4.
I have tested the coils and all checks out. Pickup coils and igniter tests will be next. I have a strong suspicion it is the igniter but still need to confirm.

What is the easiest way to check the igniter? When I use a meter for testing I am not confident. Is there a way without a meter?

My next question is assuming the igniter is bad ( I heard a pop coming from this area but need to confirm) can I go the Dyna route as I have on my 900 and 650? I understand that in 83 the ignition advance is electronically controlled rater than mechanical. If this is true can I use a rotor button from an earlier year that will work with the dyna? Is there another route I should explore using factory parts? Least expensive would be the key word here.

The bike is bone stock motor wise so I am not looking for racing applications. Just want a dependable inexpensive electronic ignition.

    Any and all comments welcomed.

    Thanks Guys

The easiest way is to follow the factory service manual section 7.5.
You could also try to "pulse" the pickup with a screwdriver tip and see if the related spark plug sparks.

Your igniter will have the electronic advance built in. If the parts inside the igniter are not potted in resin, you may find that one of the two output transistors have blown. They are easily replaced.

I will see how much epoxy and if I can get to the transistors.

If I were to go with the dyna s what parts from what years will work?
The dyna web site says the dyna is a direct replacement for points bikes IIRC.
Will the point bike components fit my crank? If so what cc and what year would work? I also read that the points cover will need to be replaced with a deeper one, is this correct?

Will this advance from an 81 GS750 fit my GS1100g crank? Is this a points type advance? Will it work with the Dyna-s for my bike?

I know I am asking a lot of questions but I just do not see much from the search function about this topic

I know the GS1000 advance unit will fit the 1100G, but I'm not sure about other bikes.

Install an early advance unit then the Dyna S will work.

The ignitors are not overly difficult to find though so you might want to try the Parts Wanted forum and see what shakes out before spending the bucks on a Dyna S.
