Starting/charging system
Hey guys I have a question. I replaced my regulator/rectifier with one from a 550 not a 450. (I have a 450) It is under charging the battery. Is that my issue? Thanks!Tags: None

Please go through this link and read though The Stator Papers. After some simple tests you will learn what the problem is. http://www.thegsresources.com/gs_garage.htmEd

I did that. Its 75 ish on all three leads. One took up to 6,000 RPM to get to 75 though. is that an issue?

How are your R/R grounds? The Suzuki grounds suck big time and must be supplemented otherwise your bike may not charge.
Standard rule of thumb for a GS charging system...
1) wire the stator directly into the R/R - bypass the factory wiring
2) Ground the R/R directly to the frame - not the battery box like Suzuki often did. Some people split the ground and run one leg to the battery as well as the frame.
3) If running the power though the factory fuse box check for voltage drop. First run a jumper from the R/R output direct to the battery and check charging voltage, then run the positive though the fuse box and compare the readings. If the system charges better going direct to the battery, wire the bike that way, but add a 15A fuse in-line with the battery.
Good luckEd

Now that I found where you are hiding..... I recall an ebay seller-salvage yard- in your area and he had lots of R/R's a while back. Do some checking, but a current item in N. Carolina is a good unit for under $10 ;
ebay item # 110431538604
This unit is bigger than stock 450 r/r. A slightly smaller Shindengen is used on ninja 250's for probably 20 years or more and are very common- might be a better fit if space is tight.1981 gs650L

Thanks to Tom, I got a Honda R/R for my 450. One thing I had to do was to have my son make an adapter plate to lower the replacement R/R. Otherwise, things seem to be working fine. There are links to photos of the plate in my thread on voltage output from the Honda R/R.
Good luck.
