    83 550 ignitor questions

    Has anyone out there ever been able to identify the parts and values of these ignitors? It would be nice to just replace the failed part or parts that are damaged and move forward to the better part of owning these great bikes(the Riding) I have not taken the failed ignitor to an electrical genius yet,but plan to very soon,just to get their take on it!! If anything good comes of it I will post a full report in this section Thanks All,Maddog

      The '83 550 has the type of ignitor with the spark advance built in, so the early type ignitors can not be used without some sort of advance unit adaption. This type ignitor is also fragile and often frys.

      There is a long thread in the archives where a member here adapted a 3rd generation 750 ignitor to fit on their 550 so you might want to search.

        I have identified most of the components in these ignitors. I could not identify a couple of capacitors because they disintigrated. The transisters fails(its dead once they fail) because some small component fails. I would replace all the components that I could. I have been looking for a dead ignitor to try and identify those last couple of components. no luck so far, I'd hate to pay for and then ruin a good one. I have managed to find sources for most if not all the components,as well as identified an upgrade for the transisters. The big problem is all the components are covered in epoxy and are tough to get to with out damaging them. This has been one of my inside projects. I'm a student, I have lots of time but no money to work on this problem. I have a list of all the components and replacements, if you want it.

            If you can send me a pic of ignitor box and any numbers, please do, I often stumble across stuff.

              You missed the point were the early ignitors won't work on the later bikes without adding a mechanical advance unit.

                You missed the point were the early ignitors won't work on the later bikes.
                It is an amazing piece of engineering that kokar put into it but I was about to mention this as well as I ran into this whilst working my project. Not being electronically savvy, however, I don't know if there is enough information available from his project that would help other folks with a similar rebuild of the "newer" ignitors. There may be a nugget in there that could spark someone (no pun intended) on, perhaps.

                They say knowledge is power so if we all keep sharing possibly something will come out that allows someone another successful solution.
