    '82/'85 GS300L Igniters

Hello! I've used this forum before, and have gotten lots of useful information, but this is my first time posting. I have two GS300Ls, and both have bad igniters. I bought the first bike from a friend, and it was missing the tank and seat. We bought another bike as a parts bike, and it turned out to be in better condition than the first. The second bike ran great and I rode it for a summer before I started to have problems. After testing everything, it seems that both the igniters we have are bad. It seems to just be a broken connection inside each. With each bike, if the igniter is pressed on both cylinders will fire, otherwise its very intermittent.

At this point what is my options? I read through the igniter replica thread, and was very interested, however others have reported that it will not work with the 300, as it uses the different resistance signal generators. I'm somewhat confused however because the service manual I found on BassCliff's site states the signal generator should test at 60-80 ohms like the others. I have not been able to test the signal generators on my bikes yet. Would this be an option?

I also read the other thread dealing with HEI modules, but got lost in the details. Would this be an option?

I really don't want to purchase a used one knowing that it could go out anytime.

Any help would be great! Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forums!

I guess the first question is... what's the part numbers on the ignitors? If it's 32900-11910, then that maps to the 1977 GS400B as well.

What that means is that more than likely the Dynatek DS3-3C will work, but it will have to be a suck it and see test (like I did with my 450) as they're officially only designed to work on the GS400's as a points replacement.

The tricky bits will be things like does the Dynatek plate simply bolt in where the stock signal generator plate bolts in? Does the 300 have an oil pressure sensor under the ignition cover like the 450 does?

The Dynatek's not the cheapest option, but it'll be brand new and they're a proven product.

I found the guys at Dynatek really helpful, so if it looks promising, I would recommend shooting them an email or giving them a call.

Your symptoms could point to a dry soldering joint or a crack in the tracks.

Some people cut the side of the case away to expose the soldered side of the PCB, then remove that thin layer of potting compound carefully using a heat gun over the soldered tracks and then resolder each component.

If this cures the problem just get some new potting compound from an electronics shop and put a layer over the soldered side and you have a working and sealed igniter.

And much cheaper than a Dynatek too
