Well, in US anyway, a particular model could have a 4 brush starter or a 2 brush starter, depending if starter from one supplier or other. Nippon Denso or Matsubishi (or something like that.)

TO answer your questions, yah, a starter brush set can be used in a range of bikes starter. 4 brush set in 4 brush starters and 2 brush set in 2 brush starters.

I'll be back in a few minutes with more specific info.
    83 GS850G, correct?

That is a Denso starter. ANd they list a 2 brush kit for it.

And they also list a Mitsuba starter that is for the same list of models. And for that starter is listed a 4 brush kit.

THat info is just to show you that can have eiter the 2 brush starter in your 83 GS850G or it can have the 4 brush starter. You need to determine which. Can see the Supplier name on end bell of the starter motor. Nippon Denso or Matsuba.

THese are the kits of just the brushes for about $10USD.
Again, you need to determin if Nippon Denso 2 brush, or if Mitsuba 4 brush.

Are also kits with replacemnnet brushholders that cost more more, and other kits with also bearings and such that cost more yet like $50USD.

The motors are more specific to the bike, based on number of teeth, and direction of rotation, and where the terminal is located. Yet, even at that, you see the list of models it the motor(s) is for.

The brushes would be the same in a wider list of models of bikes.

So, to answer your question, yes, a set of brushes can serve a wide range of models of bike.

        .

Other discussion, beyound the replacement brushes, will be cleaning up the commutator bars on the rotor. But that is not what you are asking.

You might want to contact Z1 Enterprises -- they supply riders in the UK with all sorts of goodies.

These starters interchange more than most people realize. Last fall, I installed a starter from a 1979 GS1000 into a 1982 GS850GL... you may find it easier to just locate a compatible starter.

Several years ago, I took an extra starter from our spare 450T and put it into a 650L.
