    Oh, fer cryin out loud...

Just got the brake job done, rebuilt the starter, fixed the front brake light switch...rode for two hours and now the battery is to weak to start the bike.

So, back to BassCliff's site to run the diagnostics.

No questions. More of a slap the forehead moment.

Yup it's true. 29 year old motorcycles need maintenance.

Didja have a good battery to start with.
Didja have the RPMs high enough to charge the battery?

Not much more than this, but that doesn't mean I have to be thrilled about spending three weeks getting it running only to have a new problem crop up on the first ride.

Frankly, it is just great to have a bike, but it would be better if I could get to a point where I can ride more than wrench.

Not sure about the battery. Just charged it fully. 12.84

10 seconds with the key on 12.44

          Starting 12.3-11.99

          At 5k rpm 12.58

Your bike is not charging. You might want to go though the stator papers next.

I forget the number but a battery is sposed to be juicier than that.

You have followed most of the quick test but do not have the 2500 RPM and 5000 RPM voltages to compare.

From the 12.84v (off) and 12.44v (key on) the battery seems good and charged handling the ignition and lights load well.

If 2500 RPM voltage is higher than 5000 RPM voltage it is possible you have bad connections. If no look at the stator being bad.

Been around for a year and, while I have struggled to undertake some mechanical task from lack of experience, I have avoided most of the top 10.

Griffin ran the stator paper tests last summer when he stopped by and all was good at that point...but on an old bike...things happen. I'll run through it again.

Posplayr, I did run the the 2500 test, but didn't post it up. It was about the same as the 5000k result.

I'll be checking all connections, running the stator papers tests and checking all the usual suspects.

At least I got a great ride in today before I ran into the issue.
