    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS1000 Tach to GS750 bike warning

I bought a great GS1000 tach from RustyBronco and disassembled the cluster on my GS750.
From a visual inspection, the gauges looked the same size, but when I went to install the GS1000 tach, the bucket was slightly larger.
Well actually, the gauges are the same size, only the GS750 bucket is tapered in the back.

Using the GS1000 bracket with the gauge may eliminate the problem.
I didn't have one so I made the GS750 bracket work by snipping it and letting it expand.

Maybe someone that has both brackets can compare them, matching the mounting points of the gauge face.
In other words, making sure the GS1000 bracket will mount into a GS750 gauge face.

I thought I would post this as a warning to anyone who may think of putting a tach with a fuel gauge on their 750. Now you know.
 
Ummm... I can mail you a spare GS1000 bracket if you'd like.
 
I guess I was in too big a hurry when I cut my GS750 bracket.
Getting the right bracket should have been my first move.
It's cut now and it'll work, but okay, send it to me.
Let me know what you need for it via PM.
 
Looking at those pictures, it looks as if they won't work.
The bolt pattern where it mounts to the face is not the same.
That's a nice collection you have there.
 
They look really good. I like those GS1000 style clusters. Not sure if I like it as much as the GS750, though.
I don't particularly like the bigger clusters I've seen on other GS models, not sure which models.

I'm doing a lot of cleaning on my cluster face and everything I can get to with the gauges out.
Soap and water on the cluster face and a damp rag on the gauges really worked wonders.
Any recommendations of other things to do while my cluster is apart? LEDs? Other mods?

I'm wanting to use the proper wire colors on the fuel gauge, so it may be a few days before I get it all back together.
I have to find some Yellow/Black wire and route it through the harness.
 
Replace all the light bulbs in the cluster and possibly un-crimp the bezels to properly clean the lenses.
 
Hopefully one day I'll be able to white-face these gauges.
Right now the lenses look great, so I'll save their removal until then.
 
Finally got around to trying to install my 1000 tach.
It just will not work. The face is not the same size.
The bolts holding the bucket on, don't line up right.
And after cutting the face bracket, it still won't work, either.
Not even the bulbs will fit. Or the rubber bushings.

So I abandoned that notion and installed my old 750 tach.
Then when I went to install the new tach cable, I found more trouble.
I found the broken end of the old tach cable was still in the tach.
After an hour of trying to extract it, I gave up. I'll buy a new tach.

Mail me your old tach and let me see if I can remove the broken piece.

I've got it all apart right now. Experimenting, I guess. Just had to see inside there.
I figured if I was getting another one, why not learn what I can from this one.

I really do appreciate the offer. I think I'll give it another go, myself, first.

While you're in there, see if you can cut the tach face and add the fuel gauge. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Be careful of the face, it scratches easily.

That's not a bad idea. If I can get the 1000 face out, I can use it as a template.
 
I finally manage to get the shaft drilled out. I also removed the glass and cleaned it up.
The housing is not designed for a fuel gauge, so I'll just add a separate fuel gauge later.
