How to wire directly from stator to R/R?

Hello, this is my first post so hi everyone. Just got an 82 GS1100GL last month and I am going through everything slowly. I don't know much about maintenance other than how to change oil, plugs, etc but I want to learn so I can take care of this bike.

Now, I have read that the wiring on these bikes is convoluted. Recently the R/R went bad and while taking out the old one I noticed that the wires go from the stator, up under the gas tank somewhere, and then eventually to the R/R. I read that this is pointless and that it is wiser to simply wire directly from stator to R/R.

Where exactly does the the wire go in the original wiring? I read something about a headlight switch? But since this bike (and all American) always ahs headlights on, the wiring is essentially redundant. So if that is the only place it goes, and I wire it straight from stator to R/R, then nothing will change? Will it affect the high-beams?

If this is something I should do, what supplied will I need and what kind of wire, etc.? I am very inexperienced in electrical work. Thank you!

note: the PO did provide the service book but the wiring diagram is very big and complex for my untrained eyes

note 2: I see on the R/R replacement guide on BikeCliff's website that the black (ground) wire from the new R/R should be connected to the battery. Doesn't the R/R dissipate extra electricty to the ground through that wire, so if you put it to the battery wouldn't it just feed the extra voltage back into the main circuit and fry the battery?

Follow that link to Basscliff's site and be amazed!
81 and earlier models had a headlught switch that could, possibly, maybe reduce stator load when headlight was switched off. 82 models no longer had this switch but the wiring still ran up there and back- best to wire stator direct to decent R/R.
Grounding R/R direct (or almost so) to battery negative helps R/R "see" battery's condition, so you get better charging. All this , and way more, is at Basscliff's.

            Greetings and Salutations!!

            Hi Mr. ekabil,

The ground wire on the r/r unit could be black, or it could be green, depending on what kind of r/r unit you use (OEM style or Shindengen/Honda replacement).
