    cooooked battery

So I walking by my parked GS450 I noticed that the outside call of the battery had the water level down to half. When I went to look at the battery, the all cells were at half. I put in a new battery towards the end of last riding season. The voltage still is above 12v, even with half the water gone. Bike starts and runs fine. Headlights is on fully.
Two weeks ago my low beam went out. Not thinking there was more to the story I replaced it. That was before I noticed the battery being cooked.
Sooooo, I went by your chart on checking the charging system to verify if the R/R or stator was bad. The only problem I found going through the whole chart is that at 5000 rpm, the voltage to the battery was above 18.5 volts. WAY more than it should be. ALL OTHER tests on the chart test out fine.
I did take the R/R off the bike and the case of it was probably not able to fully touch the frame because of rust. I fixed that problem and put the R/R back on. Still above 19V at 5000 rpm.
I'm thinking the R/R, even though it tested good is bad. One thing I noticed when it was off was that the side opposite the heat sink had a few cracks in it. But the R/R is suposed to regulate the voltage and keep the voltage going to the battery below 14v right?
So am I right that the R/R is bad/
Oh and with the stator wires off and engine reving at 5000 rpm the stator output is at or above 60v.

And you did the diode test of the R/R too?

Sounds like the rr is fried! I would start with a new rr and just refill the battery, use distilled water, as the battery may be ok ....... maybe . There are plenty of posts on here on which rr to buy and follow the recommended way to install. You will be able to find more than needed using the search function and basscliffs site.
