    New to GS, plug wire change

    Hello dear,

    I buy one GS550M 1983 Katana.
    Bike have around 54000 km (cca 35000 miles), and whant to check everything before going to ride it.

    I cleaned the carbs, change the spark plugs, spark plug caps, and now I block on changing the spark plug wires.

    I had try but when I remove the protective wire cover it looks like it's fixed with something on coil?

    Can the wires be changed, and how?

    Isolation on old ones looks pretty damaged.

    First of all, WELCOME. I believe you might be our first member from Croatia.

    It is possible to change the wires, but it is not easy. They are fastened to the coils with an epoxy-like compound. You will have to dig out the wire and the adhesive to get it all out. Note that there is a screw in the coil, much like the one in the plug cap, that holds the wire itself. The adhesive is there mainly to weatherproof the connection.

      Is it worth of doing this?
      Can I damage the screw, or it's hard fixed to coils?

        It's hard fixed.

        You can try pulling the wire out, or unscrewing it as it were. If remnants stay in the tunnel hole you can use a pick to remove them, working around the outside diameter. It can be done. There are some photos in the archives if you care to search them out.

          ja sam roden u Zagrebu, ali sada u Kanadi vise od 40 godina, ali idem doma puno puta, bijo sam preklani u Zadar 5 dana

                They are 7MM wires and just a little lube will help to get the new ones to turn better when screwing them into the coils. Then a dab of RTV around the wire when done.

                    Hello foks,

                    Think that I messed up my coil.

                    I try to pull out the wire, but it wasn't possible, scrap out the epoxid and wire isolation and still there is no screw. You can see on pictures how it looks.

                    Is there maybe two type of coil?
                    How deep does wire goes to coil?

                      somehow I think getting new coils, or new used coils is going to be your best bet....?

                      I don't know if that can be fixed or reused

                        Those coils are different than the typical Suzuki beige looking coils. Bummer, looks like the wire is attached inside instead of pushed over a spike like the older type coils.

                        Sorry for the bad information. Looks like new coil time.

                          If you can afford it, might want to look at the ACCEL coils, very easy to install.

                          Stuff I've done to my bike:dancing: 1100E front end with new Sonic springs, 1100E swing arm conversion with new Progressive shocks installed, 530 sprockets/chain conversion, new SS brake lines, new brake pads. New SS fasteners through out. Rebuilt carbs, new EBC clutch springs and horn installed. New paint. Motor runs strong.

                            Will try to repair it.

                            Thinking about soldering wires back together, and than puting some high voltage isolation.
                            That will work it think.
