      What about the other questions?

Did you replace all the carb O-rings when you cleaned the carbs? Did you remove the idle mixture screws, and if so, how many turns open are they? And are the pilot jet plugs in place?

David, you really really need to start over. Go read Nessism's carb rebuild and do it properly from the start!!!

The rubber plugs MUST be put back in as they keep fuel flowing the proper way. Those mixture screws MUST come out and the bodies properly dipped. The screws were plugged due to EPA restrictions that do nothing for how the bike should run.

There are passages you cannot see that can become gummed up and you'll never ever get this bike to run properly if you don't do it like we are recommending.

David, you are learning the hard way that short cuts are long cuts.

              Do the carbs properly.

Adjust the valves before they burn up and damage the engine.

You may as well fix the charging system wiring before that goes bad too.

Lots to do before you have a reliable bike.

Check the Newbie Mistakes thread please... Not trying to put you down, rather help.

Go back up to the top and do two things please. First go read up on Basscliff's information as he gives you ALOT of useful and necessary stuff in the Read Me section. One of your biggest tools to use outside of his site and actual hardware are the different parts fiches found on many dealer websites.

Second; put your bike information in your signature and your location in your profile. You can do both of these under the User CP.

You've owned it for that long or you just bought it with that much on it? How long did it sit before you drove it last?

If you just bought it, you CANNOT trust what the PO told you as they lie to sell the bike. Most times it's the small lie like I just cleaned the carbs; other times, it's the huge lie and your in way over your head because of it.

Slow down and read through the information presented to you like Ed said - Read the Top Ten Newbie mistakes thread. Read the stuff on Basscliff's site he gave you in the mega-welcome. Read through the archives here when searching. Listen to what the pros like Nessism, Steve, and a few others tell you; they will not steer you wrong because everyone of us wants to see you enjoy the bike like it's meant to be.

Ok back story on the bike. The PO's dad uncrated it in 83, rode it till 90, in 90 he sold it to his son(son was in his 40's) son rode it until 97 when he parked it due to health reasons. I was givin the bike by the son, so there were is no reason for him to lie about it. I have pert near doubled the mialage of the bike since I started riding it back in sept. I was riding the bike every day as a commuter, bike sat for about 12 hours before I rode it last. Bike had 12k on it when I got it

Hope the valves aren't all burned. 10k is a long time without a valve adjustment, and who knows if the PO ever did one.

good point, was just looking at the maintenance schedule, would a compression test tell me if I got a burnt valve?

A compression test would be meaningless until the valve lash is set.
and God said, "Let there be air compressors!"
