If you have a test light or multimeter, checking if you got power coming from the start button at the solenoid is a start. If you do and it doesn't click then checking to make sure your solenoid is grounded is next.

When you jumped the solenoid it was across the two lugs I assume. Have you tried jumping battery positive to the solenoid wire that comes from the start button/switch?

Also it goes without mention you should always troubleshoot electrical systems with a charged and healthy battery.

      Sidestand Mystery Solved

I finally got back around to my weird side stand issue. It was a ground wire that was supposed to be connected directly to the battery. It was somewhat hidden and I missed it before, stupid mistake. As soon as I saw it, I knew. It's strange because the light worked properly but the thing wouldn't crank unless the stand was in a place that apparently completed the missing ground circuit. It could be adjusted so that place was up or down.

I was convinced that it was a previous evil doer but it was my error all along.

well, the only way my bike would start was if i did not pull the clutch lever, someone wired it backwards. once i fixed that it started right up. now i need to do some routine maintenance since the bike has been sitting for a while. thanks for all your help.

Your sluggish starter could also be a sluggish starter, from all the sitting. rust between the armature and magnets, stiff bearings, bad brushes, etc. Also, check your voltage from the starter switch to the solenoid. The starter button may need to cleaned. Watch out for the little tiny parts that like fly out!

I'm pretty sure that the clutch switch can't be wired backwards. I could be wrong. My confidence level is awe inspiring, huh?

I wouldn't be surprised if you had a ground problem too. Maybe by playing around you inadvertently fixed it.

Have you tried switching back again?

Just curious. Best of luck to you.
