1982 GS 550 ignition system
Hey ya'll I just picked up an 82 GS550 project bike. I turns over but has no spark. Can anyone tell me what type of ignition system is on this bike? Electronic, points and condensor, or something else? Thanks in advance. I will be visiting this forum with alot of questions in the next few months.Tags: None

Suzuki calls it a "transistorized" ignition (or something to this effect). Uses magnetic trigger coils (replacing the points) and an Ignitor. Contrary to popular belief among newbies, the system is not and does not use a "CDI".
You can learn all this and much more by visiting Cliff's website and downloading a factory Suzuki service manual...http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/Ed

Nessism, is there a way to transplant a Dyna-S on that bike, It looks like it has a mechanical advance. Assuming there was a failure, those parts are through the roof.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

hey Nessium, is it only those 2 componants that could have failed causing the no spark issue? Besides the coils?

Electronic ignitions do not work if you have low voltage, so make sure the electrical system is up to delivering enough voltage to fire it. Either part costs more than a Dyna-S, so if it is bad there is a $200.00 replacement.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

Low voltage is the most common problem, followed by bad spark plug caps/wires, and then bad coils or ignitor, lastly the signal generators (they rarely go bad). I'd check the obvious stuff first.Ed

Update on spark issue. So today I tested the coils with my multi meter and they seemed ok. .5 -.8 ohms. So I took them off the zuki and walked them over to my daily rider GPZ 550 Kawi. I unplugged the leads from the Kawi coils, put them on my zuki coils, hit the start button and BAM I had spark! I cleaned up the terminals with WD40 and walked em back over to the GS, reinstalled and WAA LAA! I had spark. I did this again with the other GS coil and had the same result. I am wicked psyched. How did I get this lucky?
