Bolted the solenoid to my 78 1000's electrical panel and have run into a problem.A quick test fit says moving stuff is not an option.BTW I know the red wire is on the wrong terminal.Cut the fins?Use a smaller R/R from a 83 GS750?Not really liking either of those options

How about flipping the solenoid upside down. Looks like you would have enough clearance.
Could also try som standoffs to get it to clear the R/R.

I just cut the fins around the solenoid with a dremel.

Cut the fins with the angle grinder with a cutting wheel.Couldn't find the wheel holder for the Dremel.Finished the cuts off with it though.Thanks for the help.

Glad you got it figured out. Here's a photo of my setup on a '79 GS1000 without self cancelling turn signals, they take up even more room. I've got my Dyna III in there as well as a relay mod for the ignition and volt meter. I did have to rotate the the start solenoid a bit and it's only mounted with one screw. It's been like that for about 4 - 5 years now. And that is a large Honda R/R off a GL500. It all fit with some juggling. Yes, the little red wire stuffed under the relay plug is tacky but it works and it's only for the volt meter.
