    Igniter substitution

    I went out to ride my 650 gl today, hit the starter and BUB-BUB-BUB-BUB-BUB-BUB-BUB! no spark on 1&4!

    Pulled off the tank, whipped out the meter, and unless the wire broke off at the igniter itself, it's done!

    The question is, I have an igniter from a 79 (i think) 850 pn#32900-45110.

    Can I swap this one for the original? (pn#32900-34210)

    They both have 2 wire signal pickups with mechanical advance, but different style connectors.

    That 32900-34210 ignitor is pretty tough, I'd do some testing before I reached a conclusion. You might just have a bad connection.

      I agree about checking out the ignition system carefully before assuming the ignitor is at fault. For one thing, check voltage at the coils and coil resistance.

      I suspect you are correct about the interchangeability of the ignitor. I've often wondered at least and look forward to your investigation.

        Any four cylinder ignitor designed to work with a mechanical advance will work as long as it's wired in properly.
        1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
        1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

          That ignitor can't be from a '79, they did not use ignitors.

          That part number shows it's from an '80 or '81 750, 850 or 1000.

          Your original part number only cross-references to 650s in the three years they were produced.

              A brand new Dyna S can be had for about $130 if you don't feel like gambling on used parts.

                ignition continuity

                First off, thanks for all the replies, guys!!

                In my initial check, I checked the continuity of the wiring from the coil to the igniter connector (on the igniter side), and the resistance of the coils.
                All checked out. the only thing I haven't checked was the actual wires coming out of the igniter itself. can they break off?

                More testing is in order since I still have to determine if the replacement ignitor is good. if not, I'll probably build one of those HEI thingies!

                The replacement igniter came from an 850(probably '80 then), as did the stator, which is now powering my 650. I also got the pickups and the coils. The resistance on both are the same as the 650, but the coils are too long to fit.

                  Mounting questions...

                  The substitute igniter (pn#32900-45110) is too big to fit in the stock space.

                  Does it need good airflow or will it overheat if I duct tape it to the underside of the battery box?

                  I could also remove the tool tray and mount it there or possibly just ahead of where the tank bolts to the frame. There really isn't much room on a 650!

                    Good airflow is needed- metal case will get hot. How about just above swingarm pivot. But for testing purposes, you could hang it anywhere to prove that the old ignitor was faulty.

                      Yay!!!

                      It works!!

                      Maybe a little better than before!
                      The old igniter may have been going for a while before it finally gave up.
                      The engine runs a little smoother now... unless I'm imagining it!

                      The wiring of the two igniters is identical, right down to the colors, so it's an easy swap!
