Fuses and Shift Gear Indicator Issues

First of all I have a 1977 GS 750. I just fixed a grounding issue with the bike which caused to fry my ignition switch. Why did it fry the ignition switch you may ask. Because a previous owner removed the main fuse smart right. Anyway I wanted to put a fuse case in and fuse but I have no place to start so anyone know what Amp and type of fuse I need for my bike? Secondly I have had some issues with my gear indicator display on my bike. It displays part of numbers but not the whole thing. Though it does some times on rare occasions work just fine except for 5th gear it never displays 5th. So I was wondering what people may most likely think it is. The display is bad, bad wires, or sensor is bad?

It looks like originally the bike came with a 13 amp fuse in the main holder. Later years went with 15 amp main fuse, that branched out to 10 amp ignition fuse,10 amp headlight fuse and 10 amp turn signal
The gear display is just a small bulb behind a number etched in plastic- it lights when grounded out at trans sensor.

Pardon my ignorance, but if it is just a bulb located behind an etched number why then does it only display part of the gear number? With no moving parts, I'd assume it to be an all or nothing affair unless the etched gear number were somehow moved or obstructed.

I ask because I'm having a similar issue to the OP... all gear lights work except for first which just displays a horizontal line on the bottom of the display. Mine was crashed by the po, so the back of the cluster is gone and who knows what the inside looks like as I haven't disassembled it yet. Just wondering what I'm in for.

There is probably a spider web inside behind the lens.

I'll be damned, that was easy. Pulled the light bar from the cluster, went through the gears and found all bulbs to be functional. Blew out the housing, put it back together, and all is working as it should.

Thanks to the op for asking, and to everyone who answered. Easy fix that might have taken me a while to get around to doing since it was pretty low on my priority list.
