Stator fault discovered. What next?

I have just installed a new stator in my 78 GS1000C after diagnosing that as the problem with no charging . The stator leads pass through a hole in the cover, then go beside the starter motor. The old stator wires had worn through at the outside rear of the starter motor, where there is a sharp edge on the starter. The wiring had no insulation and was completely burned. I will post photos when I get to it.

I replaced the battery too. The bike won't crank. Lights come on, Is it likely that the stator grounding its current to the starter motor caused some damage? How do I check, other than trial and error?

First, did you fix the sharp edge so it won't happen again?
Second, I suggest the stator is not the issue.
Are you getting 12V to the battery side of the solenoid? If you are, try jumping the two large posts on the solenoid to see if the starter turns.

Sharp edge is filed smooth. Sheet aluminum bits installed at both bends in the stator wires to ensure this can't happen again.

I will get at testing circuits this evening.

Have battery load tested. Check fuses, solenoid and connection at starter switch.
