Battery Wouldn't Crank the bike this morning... Quick Charging Question.

    They don't need anything fancy. A functional GS charging system is all it needs, or a low amperage car battery charger. AGM is just a lead acid battery with the acid in a sponge, it's nothing special electrically. Been running them for years, none have failed yet.

    Charging system will get checked out, and I'll see if this battery will take a charge tonight.

    Also, I did go ahead and order the ElectroSport Industries Stator and R/R... Once I know the wiring is good, it's going in, regardless of the state of the current Stator and R/R... Reliable is a good thing!

      Not to burst your bubble, but Electrosport stuff doesn't get rave reviews- there are better choices. Do yourself a favor and check out the charging tests (after your battery is fully charged) BEFORE you switch stuff out- you might get lucky. Don't guess-test!

        Also, if I did have to buy an RR, it would be a series RR.

          Hmmmm... well that's not good news...

          So WHY does everyone refer to the "Stator Papers" when considering this stuff, and WHY is the Electrosport stuff what's recommended?? Very confusing for those of us who use this reference material...

          Are the other options on here somewhere??

          NO worries on the testing... I will go through everything thoroughly and test it... I'm pretty methodical at that kind of thing...

            It would be really helpful if there was a list that just said:

            "Replace the Stator with XXXX####XXX"
            "Replace the RR with XXXX####XXX"

                Can stators be maintained???? I think they are like tires.

                  I know... it gets a little tiring being accused of NOT maintaining things... As I've stated, I've done all the connection maintenance, cleaned the connections, measured the connections, re-verified the connections... Not sure how much more "maintenance" I'm suppose to do. The Stator is buried inside the motor, and the R/R is a sealed box.... they either work or they don't. From what I've read in the Stator Papers (in my efforts to maintain my system... ), it appears that, regardless of what I do, eventually, the R/R and/or Stator are going to fail, due to the design.

                    This part is not true, they do not all fail.

                      Going to do that again tonight...

                      In the meantime, I just canceled the ElecroSport order until I get this sorted...

                      The problem just happened this morning... haven't an issue before then, so whatever it was, it happened rather suddenly.

                        Not necessarily, 4 weeks ago my charging system started behaving oddly ( I have an onboard voltmeter)- voltage failed to get to its usual 14+ volts, hovered at 12.5 mostly. I put about 300 miles on it this condition and it never failed to start even though I did not charge battery between rides. Your system could have been slowly deteriorating over time.

                          Hmmm... Well... sounds like it might not be a bad idea to install a small voltage gauge so one can keep track of such things. I'll stop tonight and pick one up.

                            I have one on the 1100G, it's good to see the numbers and know it's working well. The other GSes, just have to trust that if it's worked fine all these years, it probably still is.
                            I would rather have a meter on all of them.

                              I raced sports cars with the SCCA for years... I'm kind if a "gauge freak" anyhow...

                                Well... I managed to make it home... Battery was down below 10V when I got it on the charger.

                                On the way home, the bike would die if I left it at idle too long. Under way, if the RPMs were below 3000 or so, the blinkers wouldn't blink, the guages were dim, the headlight was almost non-existent. The blinkers would blink fairly normally above 4000 RPM, but as the RPM dropped, they would go solid, then start to fade.

                                I'm charging the battery and will test the system completely.
