New Aftermarket Ignitor for the GS450.

Has anyone bought one of these yet? Finally a aftermarket ignitor? and cheap!

If its truly a CDI, then it won't work. If it's just an igniter module, is it for the mechanical ignition advance, or electronic advance models/years? (I know you don't know the answers, but the ebay ad was short on specifics) The real answer is "Who knows?"

If it's too good to be true... it usually is...

I'd be asking lots and lots of questions about it, and as stated already, there is almost no information there to indicate what it would fit.

And a GS125? Really? Never heard of such a beast...

They also offer it with one coil... that leads me to believe they have it setup to be a dual output coil, not sure that works on our bikes as I can't recall if that would have sparks firing 180 degrees out of order.

Also, the pins on the sockets on there don't match the 450 stock wiring, so it's not a direct swap in.

Something tells me it's actually for the GN series... there's a GN125, GN250, and GN400, although I know almost nothing about them so that's purely a guess.

        Pete,
        I found this: http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/suz...25_es_1999.php
Now if someone can find the factory manual for the 1999 GS125 we could see what the impedance of the pickups are and if the stator has a source coil for a CDI or not. That means that one could have electronic advance built in and still be usable.
Anyway at that price its maybe even worth getting it just for the sake of knowing!
        Keep well!

These folks apparently are the HArbour Freight of motorcycle parts.

            Pete,
I found a Spanish manual for the later GS125's. The single pickup is 120-200 ohm and it seems they use a TCI, definitely not a CDI. Thus 1 pickup, with advance built in.
This was just a quick check and does not relate to the older GS125's.
That ebay seller stocks a wide range of Chinese parts (in the USA) I ordered a clone piston and rings from him for an obsolete Honda scooter about a year back.
It would be interesting to play around with one of these!

I have found some more info that may help:
The GS125Z and 125Z from 82-87 used a 7 wire CDI with source coils in the stator.
The GS125ES 1982 onwards started with a 5 wire Ignitor and at some stage must have moved to a TCI with built in advance. The GN125 seems to use the same setup- as you thought Pete.
I am assuming then that "CDI" on ebay for the GS125 would actually be a TCI due to it only having 5 wires. There is a possibility that it may work as a replacement, but you will have to find out where the wires go. The diagram shows the 2 pin plug for the pickup and the 3 pin for ignition power, ground and coil.
Not much to lose if it does not work?

                Very interesting indeed Andre!

Very cheap at that price for sure, although I'm still curious as to whether it's a dual output coil or two separate coils... would a dual output coil even work with the twins?

Also, the signal generator coils on the 80 - 82 450's are 60 - 80 ohm, so that would need to be changed also...

The GS125 is definitely a single coil and that TCI/Ignitor is shown with a single coil package as you saw. As the output of those mostly only switch a ground to the coil. It most likely will not be able to handle two separate coils at double the current. If the 450 is using the wasted spark method, where it fires every time a piston reaches the top, then a dual coil should work, I think.

As you rightly mentioned the input pulse side could be the main problem, which affects dwell time as well. The GS125 only has one pickup, where the 450 has two.
The advance curve for the 125 and the 450 will most likely differ as well.

Well one thing is for sure its not a plug and play unit for the GS450!
                  Keep well!
