My bike Wont start, and I am demoralized

    Hey guys ,
long story short I updated a lot of maintenance part on my bike and at some point had to stop working on the bike because of my schedule.

2 months later came back to finish installing a accelerator cable, and last time I checked my bike started. So I finish installing the part push my bike to the gaz station (battery has been charged) fill it with gas and try to start it nothing. I kick kick kick nothing

Push back the bike to the garage and I check I have no spark and when I push the start button the headlight shut off and I hear only one click then I stop and the head light goes on

when the emergency button is switched to off the start button dosen't function
Checked the fuse and it's not blown
My ignition is a dyna-s unit no more points
and I think I dont have any current to the coils I checked but I am not sure I did it the right way

Any help Would be a blessing as I am eager to ride before winter ,a short season is better then nothing

sounds like the battery is shot, have you checked the battery voltage?
also check all the connections relevant to the battery, solenoid and starter.
if wont start with the kick start either then almost certain to be the battery

        Very typical of weak battery.
Charge back up with battery charger.
Then try again, may only click louder or turn over for only a short time.
But then charge up again, and see if some better. If not start, then charge up again.
You may get it going then aftger charging battery a few times, but battery is still weak and may need new battery soon.

That is normal. The Kill swtich turns off power to starter button circuit and the ignition circuit.

You my have some corrosion in some of the connectors between the battery and the starter, or even a ground.

To repeat: Kill swtich turns off power to the starter button/solenoid circuit AND the ignition.

So if the kill swtich is off, you are not going to get bike started even if you are kicking it.

With kill swtich off, the lights and most everthing else will still be on (unlike Hondas and a few others where the kil swtich kills about everything).

With battery charged to 12 or 13, that should be good enogh to run the ignition when kick starting, even if battery is weak, ....assuming you have kill swtich in run position.

With a weak battery and using starter motor, then the starter motor can drag down the battery voltage to so low that the ignition system doesnt work. But that is not a problem when kick starting, so ignotion should operate with a weak battery. With your bike being a 77, you can also turn off the headlight.

Oh, does the battery voltage stay at 12 or 13 after removing the charger? Say 10 - 15 minutes later?

Sounds to me like the battery is only taking a surface charge and it is junk and needs replacing.

                    Quick Test Steps:

                    1.) key off................Normal 12.7 volts-12.9 volts

2.) key on (but not cranking with lights for 10 sec).....Normal 12.2-12.5 volts
Make sure your charger is set to 2A or less charging current. More than that is a sure-fire way to kill a motorcycle battery.

Stop analizing it until you get a brand new battery.

Wow. Never got so mad at the bike that I would do THAT to it.

That would hurt you more than the bike.

So ignition "on" and kill switch in "run"- does it crank nicely with this new battery which you charged????
