Testing and timing a Dyna s

So I have my engine on the bench, wanted to try to time the ignition out of the bike. So, I applied 12v to the dyna and turned the rotor, and used a test light but it didnt light up. So, I put my voltmeter on the wire that goes to the coil, and it reads .3x volts
When its in the bike and all hooked up, the test light comes on when I turn the rotor, or it did last time I did it. Why would it be different out of the bike with 12v applied to it?
Is my dyna broken? Or is the way i am trying to test it not able to show 12v at the coil wires?

The dyna doesn't supply 12v to the coils, it supplies a ground for the coils which have a fused and ignition switched constant 12v fed to them.

Basically your bench setup is wrong or your testing in the wrong way.

With the engine on the bench and the coils out of the picture, hooking your dyna to power (12v) and ground with your test light connected to +12v and the other end connected to one of the dyna's leads going to the coil the test light will go out at the moment the coil is supposed to fire and come on anytime else.
