if they do offer one it replaces the ignitor and signal generator.
i do not believe they offer one for your model.

I believe that the GS400 Dyna S can be modded to work on the 450, with some work on the back plate to make room for the oil sender. There's a member here, pete, down under who I think adapted it for his 450 - you might want to PM him. It would replace the sig gen and the igniter. Bad news is that Dyna only sells the 400-compatible model with coils so it's more expensive than the 4-banger models. But maybe you wanted new coils anyway. Still cheaper than a new igniter if you can even find one, and less risky than rolling the dice with used.
Check this thread, seems Pete posted some pics...

Yep, definitely is a goer!
Post #188 in this thread onwards:
Four key things of note:
- You probably won't need to key the plate to clear the oil pressure sensor, I did but after install there was plenty of room.
- You need to run an extra wire from the oil pressure sensor up to that point in the harness.
- You need to ask Dynatek to throw in a spacer as the rotor bolts on the 450's are longer than the 400's. Tell them Pete from the GS Resources sent you so they know what you mean
- You must use the Dynatek coils, but they're a little larger than the stock coils so you will need to do some creative routing of the harness around that area.

What's special about the coils Pete? The regular Dyna S works fine with the stock GS coils.Ed

I'm assuming it's an impedance thing Ed... everything about the 400/425/450 ignition seems to be different so I'm assuming the impedance of the stock coils is too low for the Dyna S modules. My factory manual is in the garage so can't check at the moment and the Clymer doesn't list the impedance that I can find...
It could also be that these are designed for the 400/425's as points replacements, so perhaps the condensers don't play nice with the modules?1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Pete, something smells fishy to me. Points bikes typically use coils with impedance in the 4 - 5 ohm range. Going lower burns the points. The Dyna S is designed to use coils like this, although it also tolerates 3 ohm coils as well. What is the impedance of the Dyna recommended coils? Some measurement may be in order for people looking to save money on coils.Ed

The coils to the dnya tech s system is a 5 ohm coil and the stock are 3 ohm coils. Thats why you are changing the whole system.
Also I been wanting new coils and spark plug wires since 2009. Spark plug wire on right side was arcing off the motor in the rain. so i covered them till this problem happened. No spark. ah the joys of motorcycling...Anyways I would be worried because the secondary coil on the right side was reading 64 ohms. but the left coil did read the normal 23 ohms to the secondary coil. i think cause of arcing off the motor, it damage the wire and coil. And I though the bike was a goner if this happened. but I love my bike. I guess?
Thanks Pete for your info. good stuff.Last edited by Guest; 11-04-2012, 10:43 AM.

There are some threads here where people have removed the plug wires from their stock coils and replaced them. The wire fits into a recess inside the coil and sometimes it's necessary to dig out the wire using a pick of some sort. If my plug wires were arching I'd try this fix first, partly because I'm cheap.Ed

To late now. I warped them up in 2009 and rode till now. 2012. and now theres no spark so I am waiting on the dnya s to replace every thing. And I wish I was not scared to take the wire out of the coil to replace it in 2009. but coils are alot of money. so i didnt touch them. But I wait till things go then fix it all. I ride the bike everyday. I rode all winter last year. mild winter. I think the cold weather running killed the ignitor now....also age could have played a factor.Last edited by Guest; 11-04-2012, 12:40 PM.

Pete, so glad you saw the thread and weighed in on the matter!
Tak, if you go forward it would be great if you could write it up fully and maybe make a little doc with pics to go up on BC's site. Could be helpful to some future twin owners!

Tak, thanks for clarifying the impedance, I couldn't remember
I have some installation instructions I did up to complement the Dyna instructions which I sent back to them, but I think there's a little too much unique detail in there...
Shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll send them through to you. They're not really suitable for BassCliff's site but to be honest I just haven't had time to go back and refine them.
Also, have you checked your charging system out? There seems to be an awful lot of 450 ignitors dying after charging system issues, so I'd be checking that out very carefully. I put a single LED charging indicator on mine to keep a close eye on it, and it saved me when my cheap Taiwanese R/R died.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Yeah!

Won it for 90.15 $. So happy. And I need a new battery the one I have is 5 years old. lol. so next a battery.
And yea I plan on going over the whole charging system, the R/R and the stator. Haven't seen it since 2009.
I tested for 12 volts at the coils and I got 8 volts...?? but my battery was weak at 9 volts with the key and run switch on. thats from the orange/white to the neg/ground on the bike.
I am gonna put the new battery, coils, and ignitor in, then run the bike and then test the charging system.Last edited by Guest; 11-05-2012, 01:27 AM.

Nice one! You'll need some spark plug leads and the spacer too... just emailed you the instructions I did up...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie
