I've seen it here before but can't find it now so:

How do you get the back part of the starter button asembly off in this earlier style unit?toally messed up the one on my 78 1000 and don't want to do it again. The "new" one is off a 77 400 and I need to repaint it.

Can you push in on the spring and then pull that plate up behind it?

      We need a clearer picture

From the looks of it there is a spring that you may be able to compress towards the button. It seems this would release pressure from the tabe with the wired allowing you to slide it out.

The button should more or less fall into the housing at that point

beware the spring launching into space.

To add just a bit. There is usually a mound of solder that the spring centers on, keeping the plate in place. Use a small pick to hook the spring and slide it forward. Then you will be able to slide the plate/wires out of the slot. As JR stated, the spring will attempt to go to the same place your spare sox end up, so be careful.

I was using the macro setting as the super macro disables the flash. As it's sunny today:

I got some better pics. But I hope it's just a case of pulling back the spring and carefully prying up the back.
