Schwartz, they must have moved it for 82. The U.S. did not get that model.
thensley, go to page 135 of the factory service manual. Look at the picture of the battery. You can clearly see the fins of the R/R on the back of the battery.

Hey, sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. The stock R/R bolts to the right side (facing the back of the bike) of the battery box. When I replaced my R/R with a Honda one, it was too large for the stock location and the bolt holes didn't line up so I ended up moving it to the rear cowling.

Here is where the R/R bolts up on the battery box.


It's a tight squeeze, even for the stock unit. (before I cleaned things up)

Thanks Marc. That is exactly where the manual shows it mounted. Which Honda unit did you go with? I ask because they came in two sizes; a bit larger than stock, and a lot larger than stock. On my GS, I used the larger one, elongated the mounting holes in the R/R, and mounted it in the stock position. But it was on the side, so height was not a factor.

I used the FH014AA. I'm not sure if it's the biggest one, but it's a beast.

Yes, that is the larger one. I prefer it due to better heat dissipation. Do you have a pic of where you actually mounted it so thensley can view it?

Though I'm honestly reconsidering moving it behind the airbox. I'm just not 100% sure about the room. It'd be a pretty tight fit and I'd have to drill holes into the airbox or use an adhesive. Neither of those ideas thrill me.

I have used a product from Radio Shack with excellent results. It is called Superlock Fasteners. It is basically extremely strong, hi-temp hi-Strength velcro. I could not find it on their web site, but they have it in the store. Think of it as maxi-velcro. You could then pull the R/R off if you wanted, although it is very difficult. Just a thought.

Yea I'll play around with it. I'll be doing my carbs soon so I'll probably take the airbox out and get it all cleaned up. Perhaps that'll give me the opportunity to move the R/R. We'll see.

Thanks for the information and the photos. The RR I have won't fit in the stock location but I think I can attach it to the battery carrier and the air box and get it mounted solidly and with some airflow to keep it cool.

The RR I have is marked Tympanium Corporation and inside the epoxy the board is marked T-1133-2. Anyone have any idea what machine this is from?

Has 3 yellow wires with male bullet type connectors and one black wire with female bullet connector. I assume the black lead goes through a fuse to the battery + and the RR case is the ground.

Never heard of the brand, but that is the only logical assumption. Bolt the R/R down and run a ground wire from that bolt to the negative post on the battery.

Don't waste your time with an oddball R/R- you put your stator at risk. Shindengens can be had for less than $20 and have proven reliable. If space is a problem, look for a SH-530, used on ninjas since the last ice age, so there are lots on ebay- would be more than adequate at about 2/3 the size of normal Shindengen.

I won't recommend a model, but I will say a used, good quality, known R/R is about 1/10 the price of a new stator.
