    Due diligence wasn't enough.

I have determined, via all the very helpful information on this site and BikeCliffs, that my two GS850G's charging issue was a stator issue on one bike and a rectifier on the other bike. I then put the good rectifier on the bike with the good stator and am currently down to only one bike with a charging system issue. I have researched for hours on this subject and it seemed to me that buying a stator from a state side company that rebuilt them or acquired theirs from someone state side would render the best possibility of avoiding the "Chinese made stator issues". I noticed in my reading that Rick's Motorsport Electrics rebuilt stators so I decided to call them to order my parts.

I called Rick's and spoke with a very pleasant lady who answered the phone. I asked if they had any rebuilt stators that they had built for my bikes and she stated they did not but had a new one. I asked whether they had made it to which she stated that they have them made for them. I said I was trying to avoid Chinese made parts which is why I was calling them. The lady said "Oh No...our parts are definitely Not made in china. I said ok good then I ordered their "HotShot regulator and their stator.

Much to my displeasure upon opening the package, when they arrived, right on Rick's label is said one made in China and one made in Taiwan. I then called Rick's and spoke with a gentleman and explained that I had specifically asked about country of origin before ordering the parts because I did not want the parts made in China. He asked if I wanted to install the part and I told him that of course I did not want to install them. He said that I would have to send tham back and once Rick's determined that the parts were not used they would refund me the cost of my parts. I asked him if he thought I was paying for shipping their parts back at my expense to which he said yes. We went back and forth about this issue of shipping and he finally said they would send me a label for the return shipping, at their expense, to my email. Well; I guess I will continue to wait until next week for the email I am not sure will come. I have only waited a day and apparently that was not long enough to accomplish the task. I suspect I will also contact my credit card company to let them know action on this sale is eminent....

Now I am back to calling around the country to find a state side company that makes stators here while I wait for my return label and or my money returned from Rick's.

That sucks I too have "had it up to here!" with Chinese made stuff. It simply isn't up to the job most times. Don't get me wrong, it's not that it's made in China that bothers me it's that I know from too many experiences now that if something is stamped "Made in China" then it's only going to last until end of warrantee +1 day or it won't work out the box. I just bought a simple replacement part for the truck the other day, "made in China", guess what! It doesn't bloomin' fit without modification. I couldn't buy the same part made anywhere else
Come on good ol' US, start making stuff again! And when you do......... PLEASE get on board with the metric system!

I'm glad I read this. I was going to order a few parts from Rick's and have decided not to.

There are a few companies on ebay advertising rewinding services- unfortunately they aren't likely to be competitive with Chinese new ones. I've been complaining of chinese junk for 20 years, but it's like p**sing into the wind- the battle's over and they won.
I'm sure some of the chinese stators are decent- member Basscliff uses a Caltric one ($90 ) and seems content after a year's use. I've been buying 30 yearold used ones off ebay that appear good in photos (not BBQ), but it's dicey. I got two spares and both look/test good.
I can't fault Rick's for competing in this fashion- they have to be competitive- at least they stand behind their products
The R/R is a critical component of the charging system- at the very least,a used Shindengen R/R is a great (and cheap) upgrade

I've got Ricks stators on both my bikes with zero problems. If country of origin is that important to you then buy the materials and rewind it yourself. Then at least you know it was assembled in USA.

                Greetings and Salutations!!

                Hi Mr. RBray,

You will burn out any stator if your electrical system's connections and grounds are not clean, including the ignition switch, the fuse box, ANY and ALL connections and grounds for the entire wiring harness must be clean. Ask me how I know.

I've used a Rick's stator and they seem to be quality parts with a good sleeve and rubber grommet. RM Stator and Electrosport do not include the grommet and have cheap plastic sleeves for covering the wires.

After replacing the original with an Electrosport, then 2 RMStator units, I also burned out my Rick's stator. Then I REALLY cleaned up my wiring harness and installed a very reasonably priced stator from Caltric, an eBay seller based here in California. It has been the longest lasting stator I've ever used.

AND you definitely want to pick up a used Honda r/r unit, a Shindengen part from the "approved" compatible list. I keep a copy of that list on my little website. The Compufire unit is a great part but it's pricey.

OK, that's enough of that. Here's your "mega-welcome".

Maybe good stuff, but to be told something not true and then they don't want to deal with problem at their cost, says nothing but bad things about the company. terrylee

Mr. Duaneage are you out there?

I would be in the market for a used honda R/R for my 83 GS 1100. I'm sold on Mr. Basscliffs upgrade after looking at my semi-melted R/R connections. Mr. Duaneage has some tested used units for sale? I have alot more time than money.

Mr. Duaneage has been out of business for a while now, his supply dried up. Drat, do I need to update that info on my site?

You'll have to do your own shopping on the eBay or the classifieds here in the forum.

Thanks all. I will see if I receive that email the first of the week.

Thank you BassCliff. I'll check out Caltric the first of the week. I have read most of what you included in your response. Thank you very much for all you insight and information you have shared with us all.

                        almarconi,
I am not interested in winding my own. I am expecting to be able to purchase one made in USA. This does not seem like it is too much to expect.

Why would you expect to be able to purchase a part made in the USA for a 30 yr old Japanese bike? We really don't manufacture much in this country anymore. You may find parts made in the USA for a Harley Davidson but it would not surprise me if parts for HD's are also made in China.

I think you will find that their parts are made in China or Taiwan.

I bought my one and only new stator from Z-1 Enterprises. The owner, Jeff Saunders is a GSR member.
