will stock coils work for dyna s ignition installation on 82 gs1100L

I recently bought two gs1100 bikes to make one good bike,one had a frozen up top end, good bottom end, the other one had a good engine, spinning freely, with igniter gone. I used the igniter from the frozen bike,and got good spark. this bike had a newer r/r, dated 02, so used this one, which turned out to be a mistake. the bike started up and was running very well, when the lights suddenly got very bright and then went out, when this happened, I looked down and noticed the igniter was smoking and the engine died suddenly. bad mistake,trusting the r/r. So now I am needing to replace the igniter with a dyna s and a new r/r. my question is will the stock coils work for a while with the new dyna s? and secondly, how long can I run the bike with the charging system unhooked while testing, etc without harming the stator?

Stock coils will work fine. Some will tell you that other coils will work better (and they might), but stock ones will do fine.

You can run the bike as long as you want with the charging system unhooked without hurting the stator.
With nothing connected, there is no current flow, so there is no potential for any damage.

If you are concerned with the stock plug wires there is a way to get them out and install new ones. I've done that with several stock coils. But like Steve said the stock coils will work just fine.

While they will work, 30 yr old coils are subject to failure. That is why there was a whole new industry of aftermarket coils developed so many decades ago. Instead of buying dyna or accel coils(new or used $$$), consider used bandit coils for reasonable $. Todays tech + fire.

While I have no argument about installing newer coils, the technology has not changed in umpteen years. What I would be more concerned with is the number of windings, which determines the final output voltage. More windings = higher output voltage = hotter spark. That is why the aftermarket coils are always larger in diameter than GS coils, they have more windings.

The GS coils, made by Nippondenso I think, are high quality pieces. They rarely fail. A bigger problem is voltage to the coils, and maybe the wires and/or plug caps. At any rate, if you use newer coils it's important to check impedance. Most modern coils have too low an impedance to play nice with the stock ignition system. If you choose to go that way then ballast resistors are in order.
