    Why am I "cooking" my coils??

    Hi Guys, have built a 1978 GS550E special, have Dyna S electronic ignition, originaly fitted with the green 3 Ohm dyna coils, but cooked one so went back to originals, was good for a while, but it seems I still have problems on 1&4 coil, even went back to putting the good dyna coil back on, which seemed to do the trick initially, then broke down, she only seems to fire on 2 cyclinders

    Any ideas why I keep cooking coils on one side? Like I said I have tried the originals, one side is fine though. Dynatek recommend at least 3 Ohm coils.
    I have not done the coil relay mod. Have now run out of good coils and I don't want to put a new coil on in case I blow that, must be a reason why the one side keeps going duff?

    Oh and BTW, I am a bit (meaning alot) useless with electrics, so laymans terms if poss please.

    Are you leaving the ignition and kill switch turned on for extended periods without running the engine? The ignitition sysytems are designed to work only intermittently ie when the points are opening and closing as the engine is running, not as as constant closed circuit.

    Don't say can't, as anything is possible with time and effort, but, if you don't have time things get tougher and require more effort.

      No, only to try and start it, then turn it off.

        Just to clarify, I am using the Dyna S DS3-1 ignition system.

          What are your battery voltages when the bike is running, at idle, 2,500RPM and 5,000RPM?

            I can't tell you until I get it started, catch 22! I'm only using a very small battery (kickstart only) as its hidden under the seat. But have used the standard one to try and start to no avail! It was all working fine, now suddenly this.

              I was messing with my ign system once and left the key on, one coil got really hot and was melting the glue around the lead coming out of the coil as far as I know that is the only way a coil gets cookex.

                Well when I say cooked, I actually mean just not working, sorry for any confusion.

                  Have you checked the primary and secondary resistance of the coils windings, are your plugs, and plug wires in good shape?
