    testing honda r/r

I purchased a honda r/r 232 12 trying to test the diodes first time with a meter be gentle please. When I set the meter to the diode setting i get a reading of 1 before i hook it to anything and none of the readings change when i hook the positve to red and then check each of the three yellows What am i doing wrong??

I am trying tofollow bass cliffs sight and also the stator papers very new to a meter I dont know if i should have a reading of one when i set it to diode and still cant figure what i am doing wrong

update when I hook the black lead to the red r/r wire and the red to each of the yellows I get readings of 589 589 and 604

A "1" on your meter in diode test function means very high resistance in that direction. Reversing the leads gives you the forward voltage drop, like 588 ( actually .588 volt). now do everything else Basscliff spelled out!

            Absolutely nothing.

Sounds good, now you are half-way there.

Move your black meter lead to the R/R ground wire (probably black), you should get your "1" reading on the meter. Switch leads, with the red lead on the R/R ground wire and the black lead on the yellows, you should get some readings.

Note that this only tests the R/, but not the /R. Yep, this only tests the Rectifier, but not the Regulator. That has to be done with the engine running.

thanks steve i went through the rest of the diode tests and everything seemed ok. So I hooked up the honda r/r to the bike I hooked the red and green wires directly to the battery the positive through a 15 amp fuse. Now I start checking again. 13.5 at Idle 16.5 At 5000rpm. Next step check for bad connections. I think I am ok. SSo does this mean the regulator function is bad. Is there another test I can do with the bike running I Really appreciate everyones help

This is a SH-232 - where did you hook up the black sense wire to?

P.S. don't run it until you sort out that high voltage- at 5k , max voltage should be about 14.5 volts.

You must have a large voltage drop going to taillight (switch?). use a jumper wire to wire R/R sense wire direct to battery positive and see what you get now at 5k.

tom I just did as you suggest and I get 14.32 at 5000 so should i just hook the sense to the positive and do i just do this with another ring connector

Yes, you can secure the sense wire to battery positive. On this model R/R, I measured the sense wire current draw at .0004 amp with bike off - a negligible amount; bike could sit idle for a month with no problems. You should plan to investigate why you have a large drop to wherever you previously connected the sense wire.

tom 14.32 at 5000 rpm 13.32 at idle does this mean i need to hook the sense wire to the positive and do i do it with another ring connector also is the idle figuretoo high?

Be happy! getting 13.3 at idle is marvelous especially if headlight is on! Just make sure you connect the sense wire securely to battery positive- a ring connector is fine.
