    Need Help! Wire identification 1980 gs850

    I need help figuring our where some things go on this bike. i recently acquired this bike fairly complete and have since pieced most of it back together. Three things i cannot figure out are( and please forgive if they are obvious): The black wire on the far left has a female connector and i cannot find the male counterpart. The wire in the middle is a light blue kind of color that i have zero clue as to what it does and what it should be hooked up to. and lastly i cannot figure out how to hook up the rear turn signals. i see the female block that i am assuming is a cluster for the signals. the part that gets me is the rear signals have two wires each. one black and one black with white tracer. both of which have male bullet connectors. maybe im a super noob or maybe im just overstudying things. Also this wire cluster is right by my battery. i greatly appreciate any help! thanks for reading.

    Hi Mr. dropdead,

    You'll find a color wiring diagram on my little website. Let's get the full sized picture up.



    Over the years and through all of the different owners, some wiring may have changed. Regardless, right in that area are a couple of wires that connect to the fuel gauge send unit from the gas tank. They are usually yellow/black and black/white. It's also possible that one of those wires (usually green/white going up and orange/white coming back) is part of the stator loop that goes up to the handlebars. That loop can be disconnected, cut back, and taped off. See: Regulator/Rectifier Replacement. As explained in the r/r replacement guide, connect the three stator output wires directly to the three r/r input wires. Now let's move on to your "mega-welcome".

      Cliff you beat me to it. I looked but can't tell what color those wires are. The green one looks to have a yellow tracer.

      Generally Suzuki kept the wire colors the same. If someone required all bets are off.

      I can't find a black wire on the left either.

      Gas Tank is B/W (Black w/ White Tracer) and Y/B (Yellow with Black Tracer)

          the "blue" wire stated does not have a yellow tracer, or any tracer for that matter. Also this is at the back of the battery not the front. my fuel sending wires are hooked up. the wire in the picture closest to the bolt head is the "black" wire im describing. Also i would like to take this time to say that i am second owner of this bike and wiring has not been replaced or cut. harness is still fully wrapped and loomed. the person i bought the bike from had disconnected the bullet connectors to try and clean them to solve the RR and stator problem. both of which i have replaced per the stator papers and forum tutorials found on this site. im thinking i should take a better photo for a better look at what im working with here.

            i just ran outside and yanked the garage open for a quick review. it looks as though the "greenish blue" wire may lead up to the turn signal control. does that seem likely? still in the dark on the "signal cluster" and the "black" wire though. thanks again GSR.

              Sorry, I was not able to follow your question about the signal cluster, but I can answer your other questions.

              If the blue wire is behind the battery box, it is likely for the self-cancelling part of the turn signals, and should be one of the three wires that go to the turn signal flasher.

              If the blue wire is a bit ahead of the battery box, probably over or just ahead of the air box, it is the wire for the neutral indicator.

              It is not unusal for the wires feeding the turn signals to all be black. After all, the lights themselves are swappable from one side to the other, there is no reason to make them with different wires. The signal on the right side will need to have the black wire that goes through the stem connected to a light green wire on the bike. The left signal will need to have its black wire connected to a solid black wire on the bike. On both signals, the black/white wire is actually attached to a large ring terminal that is held by the large nut that holds the signal to its bracket. Those black/white wires will connect to similar black/white wires (probably a double connector) at the back of the bike, if your bike is an 850G. If you have a GL (the one with the step seat, pull-back bars and chrome fenders), the wires from the turn signals will be longer and they will attach to the harness closer to the battery.

                thank you very much steve i was out tinkering for a few after i got off work today and found that the blue wire is indeed the self cancelling unit. also my bike the GL. Thank you for your help i will now go outside and double check that the signals are going to the right places ie(right to light green wire and left to black wire) but other than that when i had it all hooked up everything seemed to work. thanks again steve.
