Fried battery
Hi guys, haven't been here for awhile but all of you have helped me in the past and I appreciate it. I have a 1982 Suzuki GS450GA and have replaced the battery in it 3 times in the last year. The last one was good for only 3 days. Each time when I checked the fluid it's bone dry. I know I need a good charged battery to do my tests. I just don't want to fry another one. Should I chance it and what sequence should I start with charging, r/r, stator? I have been to BassCliff's amazing website and downloaded a bunch of testing procedures. I'm a novice but I think I can figure it out. Please let me know if I am missing something. Again thanks for all the help.Tags: None

A sure sign of a bad regulator/rectifier (causing an overcharged condition) is a boiled out battery. All you need to get started is a volt-ohm meter, the stator papers and a fully charged battery. Follow the step by step instructions and you will be able to tell quickly which component(s) are faulty.

I'd bet your charging voltage at 3 grand is OVER 15 volts..
if so, look CLOSELY at the R/R grounding bolts to see if they are corroded and lacking a proper ground..
I usually run duplicate grounds from the R/R mounting BOLTS to the frame, then to the battery minus.... but I suspect it is too late and your R/R is bad.
search for topics on replacing with an updated one. its easy..

Typical high voltage from the R/R. It has most likely started working on the insulation varnish on your stator. You might be surprised that if you fill that battery with distilled water to the lines that it will most likely bounce right back. No guarantee though.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

I don't know for sure but I think the only R/R's that can over charge are the older ones ones that only have a single SCR on one stator leg pair.
