    Speedo Stuck at 20mph

The speedo on my 83 1100E was working just fine and today when I was out riding, the speedo stuck pointing at 20 mph. i came home and pulled the speedo cable out, no kinks or frays. I re-lubed it and put it back in and went around the block, still stuck at 20 mph. Does this mean my speedo is shot or is it repairable? I've never taken a speedo apart before. Any suggestions?

Did you try some love taps along side the housing?

Fiddle with the trip meter to see if it releases anything maybe??

Love taps, pushing the trip meter reset a million times and spraying penetrating oil into the cable opening - all didn't help. I guess I'm looking at buying another spedo?

See this thread and pics of how to pry open the bezel ring and reseal after investiagting.

Once you get the plastic housing loose of the face, you can go along side the face and use needle nose pliers to hold the shaft the trip meter knob screws in with. holding the shaft, you can unscrew the entire shaft so you finish removing the plastic housing from the guts.

It's not that hard to take apart the speedo. I just had mine apart over the weekend to fix the trip odometer. The internal mechanism is pretty simple for the speedo unit. The cable turns a magnet which rotates inside a small metal cup. The magnet induces "eddy currents" in the cup, causing drag, and that drag force rotates the needle. (standard method for mechanical speedos)

The odometers are plastic gears and are more complicated.

If you're really feeling stuck, pull the unit off your bike and send it to me and I'll look at it for you.

On an related note, the speedo on my son's GS550E wouldn't go above 20 mph and sometimes sort of hung there before falling back down. He pulled the unit, I took the speedo unit apart and could find nothing wrong with it, but lubed the bearing with some watch oil. He put it back together, but problem not resolved. Then he noticed that there was a very fine cobweb under the front glass that the speedo needle was sticking to. Problem solved.
