A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Coil relay mod question

I'm getting up the nerve to do the coil relay mod to my 1980 GS750E. I've read too many versions of the mod, what with the points version, the electronic version, on many various Suzuki models.

My specific question is - when I open the harness to snip the orange/w wire, do I want to keep the ignitor unit on the original circuit or switch it over so that it gets its power via the relay circuit?

I'm only guessing that the ignitor unit doesn't draw much current so it may just be a mute point, but I thought I should ask the knowledgeble.

(I'm trying to keep the coils intact so that if they ever have to be replaced, stock coils can still be plugged into the original harness plug.)

Yes there are lots of version and yes your ignitor still needs power. I refer to this most times as an ignition relay mod and power the entire ignition circuit from the relay.
You generally don't need to open the harness and run new wires. Once you have power to the circuit there are no further connection to worry about. that is why i simPly snip the O/W at the headlamp bucket and power the relay at the ignitor connector. If you eliminate the headlamp loop in your r/r install then
there are even two spare wires one of which you can use to control the relay from the kill switch. This is assuming you locate the ray near the battery rather than close to the coils.
