New Stator and RR, no charge....

Ok guys I'm at a complete dead end with this bike.
    1978 gs750e.

New stator and R/R, literally.....and bike will not charge!
(bike burned a R/R, so I replaced both components)
I've tested both components, no problems.

I've gone nuts double-checking and cleaning grounds around the battery-cage area. I ran additional grounds from my R/R too.

What else could cause this bike NOT to charge?
Maybe there's a ground I'm missing on the bike somewhere thats critical?
The bike runs ....however it just doesn't charge.

I guess it's time to rip apart the wiring harness.

Is the battery able to take a charge?
    Possible dead cell.

Do a quick test and report the results

Was your new stator an 18-pole unit or a 12-pole?

It should have been a 12-pole.

If you installed a newer 18-pole unit, there is absolutely NO way that will work.

I'll bet that if you install a new 12-pole stator, it will work just fine.

Yep, I'd bet that's the problem. Are 12-pole stators even available anymore? I know one guy who searched forever and gave up -- he wound up putting a later model's rotor on there.

Steve's stator guy should have easier time winding 12 pole.

I suspect there would be some output from 18 pole stator with wrong rotor, but it would be marginal and fail posplayr's tests.

Parts unlimited Catalog used to advertise they have a Ricks 12 pole stator BUT the years were up to somewhere around '81. We know that not to be the case. Must have been a typo.

You plugging the stator and R/R into the stock wire harness? If so, that's the problem. The stator should be wired directly to the R/R, bypassing the harness and it's convoluted and problematic routing. Ground the R/R to a solid frame point or the battery, and check the wiring harness for resistance losses on the R/R power output line. Jim Pos has the details.

Alright thanks guys....I bet it's the stator.
The one I threw in was from a 81 550...they looked different.
