    1150EF update and further questions

    Hi Everyone,
my 1150 is finally back together, new to me last year, finally owning the beast that I fell in love with back when they were new.
Last year the charging was marginal, now, with a new stator and a Compufire RR it charges at idle and gives a solid 14.2volts around 2000rpm, all with the 100W headlamp on, life is good... even lost the panic to add that digi volt meter.
There had been a nasty oil leak and it looks as if the new stator cover gasket has eliminated that...
    Q. There are 2 wires with female bullets hanging behind the headlamp, 1 looks black with white, the other orange? I cannot see where they would have gone, can anyone please tell me?
The forks had to come out for new seals, they now have new bushings, Sonic 1.00kg/mm springs, anti-dive blanking plates from Demon Speed and EBC HH pads. Only a short test ride so far, but it feels good, although I may add some more oil to make them a tad more progressive, as it does dive a fair bit when on the brakes. (I did not add as much as Sonic suggested or use any additional air pressure that the Canadian models originally used)
That ride reminded me that there are still issues with the monitoring module, the headlamp warning goes on and off, also the taillamp, which is now powered from the license plate lamp feed and the battery sensor...
The manual says it is under the RH side cover, but I could not see it, so pondering whether to pull the cluster and remove a few light bulbs, any thoughts on that?
Oh, and the old Michelin Macadams have been replaced with new Pirelli Sport Demons; still an old bike, but I love it.. and am now looking forward to some long rides.
The rear damper may have to be next, not sure how well it is working or if the adjustments are even actually doing anything?? I will post on that forum as well.
Thanks to all for the info and advice
    Take care

That warning module is the black box under the tank. I'm having the same intermittent warning for the headlight as well. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it but I read somewhere that it could give a false warning if the ground is bad, so I grounded the headlight plug to the frame instead of the harness. Haven't test driven it yet. The battery sensor is a red wire and you can connect it directly to batt+. it aounds like your taillight is wired differently so the module thinks the bulb is out. you might need to remove the warning bulb in the cluster. The rear shock is somewhat rebuildable. Take the spring off, remove the shock, and dig out the three O rings that control the fluid pressure. I matched mine up at a heavy truck shop that specializes in hydraulics.

My headlight/taillight warnings go on and off like christmas lights...i have come to disregard, and simply check pre- ride...

This morning i unplugged the harness connecter from the back of the speedo and sprayed some electrical cleaner in the plug. Now, the light stays off until i switch on the high beam, then it goes out again. Ive cleaned all the bullet connectors, but never treated the molex plugs. Tonight when i get home i will do it and maybe the issue resolves.....

Simply cleaning the connections didnt improve things, although now i know its clean.

I cut the module out of the harness years ago. It was under the tank, about the size of a pack of smokes. It plugs into the main harness with two plugs, you can't just unplug it though, I had to do a little wire splicing. It only does the lamp monitoring so the "normal"warning lamps still work.

            Couple of fork questions....
Are you just relying on the hole in the block off plate to control the compression damping or did you install cartridge emulators or modify the damper-rod somehow?

How much static sag are you running?

              Hello again,
thank you for your comments on the monitoring module, I had found an old post that described which wires had to be spliced together to keep the good stuff working, a job for another day.
I took it for a ride today and was disappointed to see that I still have a nasty oil leak on the left hand side, was hoping that after installing the new stator and cover gasket that it would have been cured.. The cylinder base gasket is weeping, but it seems too bad to be from there, unless of course it gets worse when its working hard??
Not sure I will be fixing it if that's what it is..
As for the forks, I am happy with them, but I am likely not a rider that can really appreciate small differences in handling, especially with this big heavy beast. I could likely have just replaced the seals and oil and still been happy.
The by-pass hole in the anti dive blanking plates is pretty big, I would not expect it to have much effect, if any, on the compression damping, and I did not take the opportunity to figure out just how the damping works in the forks when they were apart.
The ride is certainly still compliant with the stiffer springs and with normal braking the dive is only what you would expect from the weight transfer to the front.
I did not measure the sag accurately, but it was about 1 inch
Now if only I can find an easy fix for the oil leak..

I can tell you what they are based on the color, but not neccesarily where they go. Maybe they are just provided for future accessorys.

Black/White is a ground wire. Is available for any nearby device that has ground wire that needs to be grounded.

Orange is hot when key is on. Other orange wire goes to power the head fuse the signal fuse and the ignition fuse (so if all those work.....). Maybe its an extra Orange wire for accessorys, or is in wiring harness because some other model uses same harness and needs an orange wire in that area.

Maybe schematic specific to your bike model and year may show them. Schematic for my bike model and year does show a couple extra wire/connectors up front of bike.

Thank you, sounds good, I will put a voltmeter on them tomorrow to check, maybe just what I need for my yet to be mounted little digi voltmeter
Lower fairing is off again to try and find the oil leak tomorrow.
Then off with the tank to turn off some warning lamps, probably easier than messing with the instrument cluster...
                        Cheers

Check your cam chain adjuster, mine was leaking and the oil showed up on the left side of the motor.
Wipe everything down and then wrap the cam chain tensioner in a rag, use a rubber band or 2 to hold it in place and go for a ride and see if the rag gets soaked with oil, or use the talc powder method to find the wet spot.

Well I'm not so lucky this time, the t'chain tensioner area is dry, but what is a slight weep from the cyl base gasket when its idling is a dribble when I open it up on the road for just a couple of miles, making a puddle on top of the stator cover, guess it will be short rides until I can get organised to take it all apart.
Would be nice to have another bike to ride, but difficult to justify at this time.. although something lighter / dual purpose is very tempting,...
