    Ignition

    I have a 1982 Suzuki GS 850 can't seem to get the timing right please help. I've had this bike for about two years and still havnt driven it yet. I bought new coils new gaskets new head gaskets. Now trying to get the timing right it is transistorized electronic ignition I just can't seem to get started.

      Did you buy this bike as a non runner, or did some problem develop later? "new head gaskets" ??? you mean you pulled the head or did you mean the cam cover gasket?

        Warsaw, In. I rode it when I first got it had leaking head gasket bottom jug and between top and bottom so I bought new gaskets and replaced , I had a coil go bad so bought two new ones installed those tried to fire it up wouldn't start up. I have gas, spark, lights I really think its something to do with the where to set the electronic ignition , camshaft alignment.

            Do you have even a Clymer or Haynes manual? Sounds to me, like the first thing you need to check is cam timing. Once that is sorted, setting ignition timing will be a breeze!

            Remember, you only need three things to fire the motor:
            1). compressed air (incorrect valve timing will prevent this!)
            2). fuel (in the right ratio to air)
            3). spark (at just the right time *ignition timing!*)

              Sounds like you might have disturbed camshaft to crank timing when you replaced those gaskets- it's real easy to get things off and lots of folks forget that crankshaft makes two revolutions for one revolution of camshaft. You gonna need to pull cam cover and see how things line up top to bottom. Don't be shy about taking an offer of hands on help.
