Series (Mosfet) R/R $60 shipped NEW – SH775 and CompuFire alternate?

    Will it work?
What should I be weary of?
What questions should I ask the manufacturer before I place the order?

    I happened on this trying to find a SH775 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/290956964516...516%26_rdc%3D1

    (Here is their SH775 (polaris # 4012941) - http://www.ebay.com/itm/290956872108...108%26_rdc%3D1 )

It is a Mosfet R/R. I spoke to the supplier/manufacturer RMStator (www.rmstator.com) tech and they confirmed that it is a series (and NOT shunt) R/R that they have built in china and that is the new tech they are making.

1981 GS750L - Owned since 1990 when graduated high school and since have been discovering all the things not disclosed by seller.
1983 GS750E - bought in 2016 as a rough runner to use while rebuilding 81L and then to combine with ES to make one good one
1983 GS750ES - bought in Toronto in 2015 on a lark as a non-runner, missing front cowling and exhaust - If you have a 1983 750ES front cowling let me know! Blue would be nice

NO THE MOSFET IS a shunt R/R

How do you figure it is SERIES?

1 - Because that is what the Tech guy at the manufacturer said when I called them to specifically ask if ti is Shunt or Series. I asked in several ways. Tech can be reached at - 819-849-7333

2 - Because their SH775 replacement (the one w/o the pig tail) - http://www.ebay.com/itm/290956872108...108%26_rdc%3D1 - has this as the first OEM #4012941 which is the Polaris number (click the OEM tab in the description)

Maybe someone more R/R knowledge (posplayer?) can vet this offering because if it is a Series w/pigtails and a connector it may be a very good solution.

and to be clear, this is the one I'd be after ($60 shipped on their ebay site) http://www.rmstator.com/en/motorcycl...ifier-rm30508h

and 3 - from the product description - "It is time to update or replace your voltage regulator with the advanced MOSFET type. This modern, ultra-reliable design can handle up to 50amp peaks and 30amp continuous 3 phase, 30amp single phase. It runs cooler than all OEM diode style regulators. In addition, this rectifier has overheat protection, rather than burn up it will simply turn off for a while and cool off."

I see what you are talking about, but if you want to remove any doubt for a little more money and get an OEM unit:

            $67.00 + shipping

            $78.00 with shipping

I seem to recall another thread with this other place recommended, but I've never ordered through them:

            $68.43 + shipping

            '83 GS650G
'83 GS550es (didn't like the colours in the 80's, but they've grown on me)

I don't see anything to indicate that it is SERIES. Just because they claim an OEM replacement for a Polaris does not do it for me at least.

Sounds like there is some thermal shutdown logic so perhaps that is what they claim is SERIES. The only way for a SHUNT R/R to shut down is to go open circuit which would require a Series element but that doesn't mean the whole thing uses Synchronous Rectification (SR gets rid of the diode bridge) and can Control charging in Series mode.

I bought the Polaris 4012941 (Shindengen SH775) from Ready Imports in Mississauga for $93 (Canadian) plus taxes. This isn't much more than the US prices + exchange + shipping. It arrived ten days after I ordered it. Unfortunately they aren't really set up for online or telephone orders.

Now I just have to figure out where to install it. It's bigger in every dimension than the Electrosport that is on the bike now and the connectors make it even bigger. Now I'm waiting for connectors to arrive.

                  Jim,

It looks to be the same size as the MOSFET FH0020 unit I picked up for my 650, so it should still fit under the battery box.

I have one on order for the 550ES, but don't imagine I'll get it before you sort yours out.

P.S. your $93 IS a good price relative to my $88.00 (after exchange and pickup fee) + time.

I could add a spacer if the connectors are too close to the edge of the battery box. I think I have enough extra wire on the stator leads to clip off the bullets and install the Furukawa connector. One connector, no soldering. I might get a pre-wired Eastern Beaver fused battery connection kit. Furukawa and Weatherpack connectors are really hard to find in small quantities in Canada.

So how can one confirm if it is Series?

buy one and test it using a clamp on current meter

                          Unscrupulous vendors

The OEM Polaris part # is 4012941. Creative vendors are using the same part number so that when you Google search the part number you find 'em. The non OEM vendors may or may not be the proper part. I ordered OEM Polaris to make sure the part is real (series).

so once a person has this R/R and a clamp-on-current meter, what would one look for?

(the only part I know, is to put a wire inside of the clamp hole. Now which wire and what to look for I have no idea)
