alright, stator is shot, riding my bike home from church and typical alternator response with the throttle. it died like it wasn't getting gas and electrical went out. soooo. second thing I took my stator cover off and it was covered in oil, is that normal? regardless I ordered a new one. The gasket on the bikes stator cover was shot so I guess ill need a new one of those, any tips would be great!!!

Have you been through ALL the wiring including the headlight bucket, wiring harness and grounds yet? Pull apart, clean and re-grease all connectors on the bike, checking them all for signs of heat buildup or bad connections.
IMHO until you verify your wiring is good you will not be able to test the system properly and depend on the results. If the bike is new to you I would guess the PO never cleaned any connections.82 GS850L - The Original http://s224.photobucket.com/albums/d...ePics067-1.jpg

Don't assume that it's the stator. On my GS850 it was the Rectifier/Regulator that was shot. The stator was putting out a solid 80v AC on each leg and ohmed out correctly. Output from the R/R was 0V and failed one of the diode checks. Conclusion... Never skip the diagnostics part unless you just like throwing $$$ into an empty pit.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg
